Beautiful story and scenes. A bit dark at times but gives the movie it's place in historical drama. Dubbed from Russian. Because it is a Russian movie it almost seems like it was a propaganda movie from the old Soviet regime. Especially with the intense flag waving parts of the film. Interesting uptake on this part of history

heroic... very realistic battle scenes
a gritty look at the taras bulba story - takes the rose-tinted glasses off (through which we watched yul brynner)... in fact, some sensitive persons may want to skip the battle scenes...

WORTHWHILE VIEWING
Though I've not read he source material, I'd wager that this s a fairly accurate adaptation. Great production values fine photography and engaging characters make for an entertaining two hours plus, despite some slow spots. it becomes quite gory in the latter half, though, which marred my enjoyment.

I finally found it.
This movie was highly recommended to me. In researching this movie I found out that the European title ( hard to find ) wasn't what it was called in its North American release. I was able to get the movie in NTSC and English dubbed. Much easier to watch.

Other than the salutations to the motherland russia....this movie is a good one. No self respecting Ukrainian would speak of Russia in the manner that this movie does. All that aside it was enjoyable
