Question 1

Looking for a tracking device that would work on my dog & cat when camping/hiking in areas with mountains, woods, streams, & lakes. Would this work?

Yes, absolutely.  Trees don't bother it much, but terrain can.  Example: I live on a curved ridge, and my neighbor is at the same elevation but further around the curve (about 100 yards).  When my cat goes over there, the tracker will say ~70% power (range).  As I head toward him, if I walk straight ahead and DOWN into the ravine, the signal will actually weaken as the earth begins to block "line of sight".  As I walk back up the other side, it will strengthen again.  Sometimes in the middle, the direction indicator no longer works.

If I walk along the top curve of the ridge, the signal raises from 70% as I go & the arrow stays spot on toward him.  Both tactics work OK, but sometimes the former takes some triangulation or trust that you're still heading the right direction.

Question 2

Our cottage is on a heavily wooded but flat island. Would this tracker work to track a dog who may swim to the next (very close) island?

While the dog is swimming you may not be able to get a signal just depending on whether the tag is above or below the water line. Once he is on the other island there would be no problem as the range of operation  over the water is pretty much the same as open, flat land.

Question 3

Anyone have experience with tracker being used on lab/that swims daily in a lake? Does it hold up well? Big investment if it is not 100% water proof!

Don't waste your money. It's not waterproof. Not well made. The connector to charge the receiver on mine wore out in two months. The thing works but can't charge it. The range is limited. My next purchase will an expensive but well made hunting dog tracker from Garmin.

Question 4

Does anyone know the range of this tracker?  Say the dog runs off w/o you knowing it.  How far does it read the tag?

It claims up to two miles.  But that’s all dependent on the terrain. I would say from experience it’s much much more than 300 yards though, as the other answer here says.  That unit sounds defective or maybe it’s user error. But I’d likely already returned mine if it only tracked 300 yards.
