The original is designed by the famed Frenchman Philippe Bernede-- Clos La Coutale-- You may get more info at www.coutale.com--I have never noticed any country marked on the product? but, it is patented and shows the brand on the opener "Coutale SOMMELIER Prestige!" I got mine from Amazon and it works great!! I do not use the knife as a foil cutter very often but it is fine! I prefer a separate foil cutter as the one in the cork screw is actually a knife that while very nice is very sharp and you could cut yourself if not careful!
