Mr. Robot: Season 2 [Blu-ray]

Esmail's wild ride
Honestly this is probably one of the best shows on TV right now. Mr. Robot follows the story of Elliot, a cybersecurity expert. Follow Elliot's journey as he finds himself recruited into hacktivist group aimed at taking down the 1% of the 1%. The show is relatively unique in that you, the audience, is acknowledged by the main character. There's a good reason for that though since Elliot suffers from some mental disorders and depression. This results in allowing the show to have some unique interactions with its audience, which in turn, lets watchers of the show feel like a character in the Mr. Robot show-verse. With that said, here's something to keep in mind as you watch the show: Elliot is an extremely unreliable narrator. One of the main attractions of Mr. Robot is it's use of tech. There's no CSI/NCIS "gui interface with virtual basic", "we'll hack faster if we have two people typing on a keyboard", "ENHANCE" cliche here. Instead, you can expect to find relatively accurate terminology, programs, and methodology. Obviously there are occasional instances where something is done not quite exactly as the way it should be done but sacrifices need to be made sometimes for the overall story. However, even with all the praise the show gets for its authentic depiction of hacking and technology, I want to make something clear, hacking is not the main focus of Mr. Robot. This becomes more apparent in Season 2 where hacking takes a backseat and character study becomes its main mission. Whereas Season 1 mainly brings to light the question of privacy and wealth distribution, Season 2 focuses more on character development and philosophy. As a result, some parts of Season 2 have been criticized by fans of Season 1 as "pretentious", "not enough hacking". Some people may even feel as if the show doesn't have a main direction anymore. In my opinion, Mr. Robot is very much still on track and its purpose hasn't changed. The show creator, Sam Esmail, originally planned for Mr. Robot to be a movie. When it became clear that the story of Mr. Robot couldn't sufficiently be told in 2 or 3 hours, it was converted to a tv series with a planned 4 - 5 seasons. If we used the traditional method of story telling with a beginning, middle and end, it's much easier to understand the tone shift from Season 1 to Season 2. Season 1 was just the introduction. Like all introductions, it's used to reel in audiences with an interesting aspect of the show (in this case, authentic hacking) and allows the show runners to introduce the characters . Season 2 is the start of the middle. This is part is all about character development. This is where characters of the story encounter conflict and change as a result of overcoming that conflict. While Season 2 may be a lot slower, I personally find it much better than the first season. I find it interesting how some characters have made a complete 180 from the start of the show. I find it captivating how Elliot struggles to understand his disorders to get a grip on his life. In my opinion, Season 1 was just a great, but rather normal/safe TV show. Season 2, on the other hand, is art. Some will indeed find it pretentious but that's because this season has taken great risks in trying to make a show that is different from most other shows. In a time when we have other great shows such as Game of Thrones, Breaking Bad, and Fargo, it's a tall order to stand out. While it's a huge task to stand out from the above mentioned shows, I believe Sam Esmail is the guy to do it. Why? Because this season has some of the best visuals and cinematography in the industry. This season is also one of the most detailed ones out there. For example, a reddit user was able to figure out a major plot point in the first episode just by compiling small, brief details in the background or hidden in the dialogue. This is not a media piece like Now You See Me where the creators think themselves as smart just because they throw a sudden unbelievable twist in you face out of nowhere at the end of the journey. There are surprising twists in Mr. Robot but it doesn't come out of nowhere. The clues are all there but you just have to look closely.Sometimes you may wonder where the show is going, but rest assured, the show runners have a clear vision and a clear story that they want to tell. If you watch an episode, you can tell just how much passion and effort the show runners put into Mr. Robot. This is Sam Esmail's wild ride and you know what? I would like very much to continue to enjoying it.

Another great season (Prior Season Spoilers)
Season two of Mr. Robot continues the strange trip that is the story of Elliot and fsociety versus E-Corp (or Evil Corp as the characters refer to it). Season two is set months down the line from the successful hack of E-Corp. Elliot, now knowing that Mr. Robot (played by Christian Slater) is really his dead father that he has been hallucinating is staying with his mother and trying to get rid of Mr. Robot, only to fight a losing battle with him constantly. Darlene (Carly Chaikin) is now in charge of fsociety and continues to try and take down E-Corp from the outside, continuing the hacks, while Angela (Portia Doubleday) is now working her way up the ladder at E-Corp. Tyrell (Martin Wallström) is missing and is mostly absent (at least in person for most of the season), and Joanna (Stephanie Corneliussen) is trying to find him while also having a fling with a new guy who gets more and more suspicious of her.The show continues the serial story arc from season one, revealing more and more of the backstory and including a lot of twists and turns. Of course, the audience experiencing events from the perspective of a mentally ill character allows for a lot of weirdness, as things are definitely not always what they seem, and includes some crazy moments like a 1980s/1990s sitcom version of a family road trip with that featured the 80s sitcom character, ALF. The new addition to the cast this season is Grace Gummer, who plays Dominique DiPierro, an FBI field agent investigating the E Corp hack, and BD Wong (from Jurassic Park) makes a couple more appearances as White Rose. For those who get the blu-ray set, the show once again looks and sounds great in HD. The episodes and the extras are spread out over three discs. The extras include deleted scenes for most of the episodes and a couple of behind-the-scenes featurettes. Not a ton, but what was included is good if you like watching the bonus content.Overall, the show continues to be very entertaining. Like in the first season, there is a lot of violence, swearing, sex, and drug use in the show, so it is not family-friendly and will not appeal to everyone. It is definitely telling a long drawn-out story, so you have to watch from the beginning to have any clue about what is going on. The writing and acting are both top-notch and the show does a good job of revealing small details about the story while not giving away too much. It also blends the storyline into the real world (using clips of the mega-rich and politicians) to establish how the super-rich controls everything and why fsociety wants to take them down. It is definitely a great show and worth the time to watch.

One of the best series in recent years.
Package came here two days early and in perfect condition.Show itself is very thoughtful and often intense; Rami Malek does a brilliant job in capturing the viewer's attention and giving you a view inside of Elliot's mind. Not sure it has the same character as the first season, but by far one of the best shows in recent years.10/10, should get a few Emmy's/.
