My vegetable dicing, chicken butchering and meat cutting kitchen knife.
For what I will use this for I give it a solid five stars. Packaging, arrived in solid packaging, to say the blade was sharp would be an understatement. Handle, large enough for the blade size, and comfortable enough in the kitchen but not as thick as it could be. If most people choke up the grip to the interior curve of the blade and puts the thumb on the jimping it is a four finger handle. Otherwise it is a three finger handle For the tasks it will be used for it is more than adequate, a larger handle would encourage possible abuse of the blade. The D10 scales have enough shape and texture to grip. Lanyard hole, some may put paracord through it for additional stability when skinning, but IT won't get that in my kitchen. Blade steel, 7C17Mo steel is corrosion resistant, tough enough for veggies, fruits, meat and cartilage, easily re-sharpened. This is probably not intended to be a kindling processing knife. Not an expensive super steel but not a random carbon steel or low grade stainless steel. Good heat treatment, although I did not measure the hardness of flex. Blade shape, seems to have a consistent curve, good geometry to the handle. Primary grind is long and shallow, secondary grind is sharp and consistent with no nicks or dings. The front top edge looks like it is sharpened, but that is only a primary grind to about 1/16" flat. Sheath, meant for right hand, blade down, handle in trailing position. Canvas is well stitched and riveted with an almost two inch belt loop. The closure is both rough aggressive Velcro and solid snap. Uses, kitchen and skinning. With the somewhat small handle, blade steel and blade geometry, I would not use it for bushcraft, edc or defense. Required additional items and skills, a good sharpener, hone, practice sharpening and a cutting board. If you are new to sharpening, I would recommend practicing on a straight blade before advancing to such a curved blade. Using this to cut on pans or plates could damage the edge. IF you do not keep this sharp you will be disappointed. Long term care, I'm going to find a place in the kitchen to store this so the blade doesn't dinged in the knife drawer. I will also occasionally sharpen it with 1,200 grit diamond. While I cannot say this is the best forty bucks I have ever spent, it is close. I am more than satisfied with the purchase.

Best ulu ever
Skinned an elk in 20 minutes. I own 3 of these so I don't have to stop and sharpen so often. These are easy to sharpen and stay sharp longer than any other blade I've ever used. Works great for processing game meat of all kinds. Cuts through tough tendons like butter.

It's perfect. Wish we had it a long time ago!
It cannot be exaggerated how great this little blade is. It saves a tremendous amount of time when skinning a deer. It's incredibly sharp and intuitive to use. We've never used a knife like this before and it was a game changer. The quality is what you'd expect from Gerber. It's honestly an incredible value for the money. I highly recommend it to any hunter and or butcher or outdoorsman. You won't be disappointed!

Gerber’s interesting take on an Ulu
It’s actually surprisingly comfortable to use with excellent ergos. It’s going to now be my primary BBQ meat slicer after honing the 7CR17MOV steel. The steel is soft, but durable and quick to sharpen. I forgot how to hone it on my ceramic rod, because I t kept getting this burr I kept feeling with my finger tips, but it was something I could actually just touch up on a strop and the burr would go away, resulting in hair whittling sharpness, but will require more frequent honing. The ergos are great, I’ve got full medium sized hands and it fits like it was made for me, especially slicing meat and vegetables with it. With the traditional style knife handle placed over the blade, it feels great pushing and slicing at the same time. The blade grind was decent out of the retail style packaging, but there was this one spot that had and extra little bevel at the belly on one side. Noticeable extra “flat” on the side with the Gerber logo, but it sharpens up just fine. The handle scales are G10, but what is not mentioned is that only the black outer scale is, but the inner handle that’s olive colored is plastic that’s molded to fit around the blade handle. It’s sandwiched between the G10 using some nice looking rivets, so the scales aren’t removable. They have excellent grip with the plastic/ G10 combo and the jimping goes along the spine starting from the middle of the blade continuing into the plastic handle. The other end of the tip that appears ground is not sharpened, but you could if you wanted to. Waxed canvas sheath appears and feels durable so far with good velcro and button snap combined. Belt loop web is 1-1/2” wide and the opening between stitches is a tight 1-7/8” for your bet to pass through. I’m only giving this 4 stars for the failure to mention how much plastic handle there is, with two slabs of G10 sandwiching it. At almost $60 to not have full G10 slabs really leaves me wondering how much of the blade tang goes through. I’m thinking likely just up to the middle rivet. The 7CR really should put this Ulu around the $40 mark tops… Nevertheless, Fun knife!

Fits in my hand perfectly, very comfortable to cut with
I bought it a few months ago to use for deer season but have used it to cut vegetables and steaks when camping. I'm buying another so I have one in my truck and one for hunting.

Big and little at the same time?
This is a solid little chopper. It's little and easy to carry around, yet it does pack a little punch when it needs to. (Though it doesn't really have a ton of weight behind it, so it does feel just a tad bit awkward at times when chopping.) Other than that though, I really have no complaints so far with this Ulu. The edge retention has seemed decent from the tests I've put it through. (I did get a tiny edge roll, but that was from hitting a nail in a board, so I can't blame the ulu for that.) The handle/grip are a little on the thin side for my personal liking when chopping. At the same time though, I do appreciate not having a big "hatchet" sized ulu on my belt, so I appreciate the small size of the handle as well. If it were much thicker, it would definitely be awkward to hang on your belt. Even though the handle is a little on the thin side, it still is comfortable and there are no weird pressure points or anything when using it. I chopped at a few boards and logs for awhile just to test this out and my hand felt perfectly fine while/after chopping. (Like I said, no weird pressure points, vibrations, etc..) Also, I really don't mind the sheath for this? It's nothing special, but I like that it has the button and the "hook and loop" closure. That way, if for some reason you forgot/didn't button the snap button, the hook and loop (velcro) would most likely hold it in. So overall, if you're looking for a little ulu, this one seems to work well from my testing and I'd recommend giving it a try if you're looking for one of these!
