Is this lens good for portrait photograph?

A 1.8 f stop prime would be ideal but this is very good

how is this lens compared to the kit lens in term of image quality?

Depends on the kit lens. If it is the Zeiss 24 - 70 mm f/4 it is vastly superior. Faster, sharper and autofocus is much better. Compared to the Sony 24 - 105 f/4, it is comparable but faster with the proviso that the wide angle lens is reduce (28 v 24) otherwise I prefer this lens. It is a nice alternative to the Sony 24 - 70 f/2.8 at a much nicer price.

does it compatible with 6400?

If it’s an e mount then it’s compatible and it’s also compatible with any e mount camera. Just keep in mind that since the a6400 is a crop sensor you’ll get a crop in the lens
