Has anyone been successful at receiving channels from both vhs and uhs using this antenna?

Aaron, yes, this antenna receives channels from both vhs and uhs. I've a Vizio 4K hdt.This is the best antenna I've ever used. I'm also able to use my cellphone without the t.v messing up. You know cellphones can warp t.v.  reception. I'm able to get every channel except 11WPIX. I live on the east coast. I'm not a tech person but I've learned from trial and error that knowing how far your home is from each channel's satelite tower is crucial when deciding on how many miles your antenna can pick up good reception. Finally, outside interference can also make receiving perfect reception unsuccessful. Like Hightowers blocking satellite connections.

I live in the boonies, in a valley, what might I expect from this antenna?

I live in a flat suburban area about 25 miles from the nearest tv station which is totally different that your situation. I recommend putting your address into the following website to help give you an idea of expected signal quality:  https://www.fcc.gov/media/engineering/dtvmapsHaving the ability to place this antenna in a window facing your local TV stations should give you the best chance for a perfect HDTV picture.

Do I need one for each of my 4 tvs?

I have just one tv hooked to this antenna and I am not sure, however; If you did hook in more than one, you would need a splitter and, of course the extra coax cable run from the (4-way) splitter. Personally, no more than the antenna cost, and by the time you bought extra cable and coax. I would use separate antennas. If you do try to split the signal to other tvs, I would just run the coax across the floor to another room before going to the trouble of running wires through walls, attics and crawl spaces. If your signal is poor running the cable across floor is poor, you saved yourself a lot of trouble...hope this suggestion is some help
