Saved my long-haired cat from a huge matted knot!
I didn’t notice until it was too late — my long-haired cat had developed a massive, rock-hard mat on her back. It was way too tight to brush out, and I was terrified of cutting her skin trying to remove it. Decided to give this TropiClean spray a try even though it’s marketed for dogs, and I’m so glad I did. Here’s what worked for me: Day 1: Sprayed generously onto the mat and gently worked it in with my fingers so the product soaked all the way through Day 2: The mat had softened noticeably — I carefully trimmed off a small outer layer Days 3 & 4: Repeated the spray + massage + trim routine Today I finally got the entire mat (about two fingers wide!) completely removed. Her fur isn’t greasy afterward, the scent is light and pleasant, and she didn’t mind the spray at all — no irritation on her skin either. ⚠️ One important warning: When you’re trimming a mat, please be extremely careful and patient. The skin underneath is often pulled up into the mat, so always cut along the outer edge, well away from the skin. Go slowly, snip a little at a time. It’s very easy to accidentally cut your pet if you rush. Even though it’s labeled for dogs, this worked beautifully on my cat. Highly recommend keeping a bottle on hand if you have any long-haired pets!

Tropiclean works
I've used Tropiclean products before and really liked them. The detangler works great. I have two dachshunds that have really thick hair that gets matted. I spray it on the mats and work it in with my fingers. I try to cut off the top of the mat and then comb out the rest. It's made grooming less time consuming. No rinsing needed. Smells great too.

Seems to work fairly well
Our cats have been shedding a LOT this season, which isn't much trouble for our shorthair as she just sort of drops her fur wherever she sits, but our longhair has this pesky combination coat - slightly curly in spots, plush underfur, and long, soft guard hairs - and he has been matting like crazy to the point we can't keep up. Every time we brush one out, three more appear like some fuzzy hydra. So I found the reviews for this stuff and they were all pretty good. We managed to get him to sit still with a bit of struggle (he's starting to fight grooming since the mats - and removing them - are starting to hurt after warring with them for so long). The product does seem to work. It doesn't do a whole lot for the top section of the tangle, oddly enough, but it does start to loosen up the bits closer to the skin so we can remove them without causing him as much pain. I can't give a full review of how good it is since he turns into a tasmanian devil when the brush comes out now, we're trying to work on bringing back positive association with grooming but it's going to take some work. But unfortunately, while it helps, it seems his odd fur type doesn't lend itself to this stuff being quite the miracle it sounds like it was for everyone else (I have had other Maine coons, their fur was not like his - his is like petting a cloud, but that seems to mean it's more prone to getting knotted up). The mats are still winning the war, so we're setting the poor guy up to get his fur shaved down here soon so we can start over, hopefully get the "ouchies" off so his skin won't be so sensitive and we can teach him to like th brush again. We plan to use the D-Mat as a prevention tool from there on out, since it definitely looks like it will work for him for that at least. The one thing I really don't like about it is the smell. I honestly wish companies would stop perfuming everything, especially pet products. It smells strongly floral to my nose, so I can only imagine how much stronger it smells to the cat. It does fade within a few hours, but that smell certainly can't be helping him like it any more. It's not necessarily a BAD smell, it's just kind of strong. I would love to see a fragrance-free version.

Got It For The Cats, Use It For My Hair, Too…
I got this for my long-haired cats, to keep up with mats they sometimes get. But I have a long, fine hair, and it tangles easily. I have lots of products for that, designed to detangle human hair, and they have varying degrees of effectiveness. This worked so well on the cats, and I figured people often use Mane ‘N Tail detangler for horses, so tried this on my own hair, and it works much better than any of my detangling products. It would be especially useful for those who have maybe been laid up, and not able to brush their hair every day, or had it tangled in the wind, or just those of us with particularly tangley hair. Now I don’t use the other detangler products, because comparatively, they’re pointless. I like the smell just fine, it smells good and clean to me. And for those of you who have animals that don’t like the sprayer, you can either get it right up very close in your hand as you hold the mats, and spray it into your hand, or you can pour some out and dip your comb in a glass or shallow bowl, or even spray the comb or brush. Plenty of ways to get it on them.) So, for cats or humans, so far it’s the best for actually detangling fur/hair, making much shorter work of the detangling process, and it leaves the hair nice and soft.

It helps soften the mats.
My Maine Coon developed several large, severe (down to the skin) mats on his hunches when I was unable to brush him due to severe illness. As he is really fearful of clippers I decided to give this product a chance before taking him to a groomer. I thoroughly sprayed the mats and very gently rubbed the spray in down to the skin, dabbing the excess, and let it sit a few mins. The spray did soften the mats at the skin level enough so I could carefully tease out a few hairs at a time and cut them (It allowed me to get the tines of a small comb between the skin and hair to safely cut it), and loosened the very small mats enough to be combed out. I must stress this was a painstaking process as the mats were really bad and my cat less than cooperative, but I was able to cut out all the mats in the manner above which I was unable to do prior to using the spray. So don’t expect the spray to untangle mats on its own, it just softens them. If my cat would’ve been more receptive to clippers I would’ve went that route as it took a great deal of patience, time, and gentleness to get them out the way I did. It does smell really good.

I wasn’t sure when I ordered this but it works great. It makes it so much easier to brush

It's not magic, but I'm amazed how much easier this product makes it to remove knots and matting!
I have a maltipoo that gets lots of tangles on his ears and tail. They'll turn into mats within a week or so if I don't keep up on combing and are a real pain (for me and him) to remove. This products has been a game changer. I'll close-up spray/soak the mats and gently pull them apart from different directions until the hair is a big loose tangle (this step is near impossible without this product). Once it's a big loose tangle I work from the outside of the tangle to the center with a steel comb. Even with the comb moving through the hair smoothly, chunks of loose hair/mat will stay stuck in the hair so I'll gently pull them out with my fingers, then comb some more, then gently pull some more. It's a fair bit of work, but it wouldn't be possible without this detangler. I used to use Cowboy Magic but this stuff is way way better. It smells better, soaks tangles better, and doesn't leave any kind of greasy film!

Beneficial for Managing Knots and Tangles
PROS: 1. TropiClean eased detangling and reduced discomfort for my miniature poodle. It made her hair softer and allowed for smoother combing. 2. The spray saved time because it was less difficult and quicker to get the tangles out. 3. The scent is pleasant. The ingredients are all-natural, and it's a "leave-in" conditioner. There is no need to wash it out. CONS: 1. There is a potential for residue. It isn't greasy, but I think if used too frequently, there would be an excess build-up on the dog's coat. After using TropiClean, you can feel that something has been worked into the hair when you touch it. 2. This is a grooming aide and a short-term solution, not a substitute for regular grooming care. I sprayed her ears and muzzle, worked the detangler into her hair, waited 30 minutes, and then combed her. Of course, routine brushing is essential to prevent matting in the first place, but she had been sick and missed both her home brushing and groomer's appointment, so I'm glad to have TropiClean on hand for just such occasions.
