Quiet, lots of media, smart design, easy cleaning, Fit my 20 gallon hexagon tank.
The media could not be loaded. Pictures attached are 1 day after install.Tank: TopFin 20 gallon Hexagon(8.5 inch slot on back for filter was perfect for this one).Replaced: TopFin 20New Filter: Tidal 55Tank age: 1.5 yrs.Stocking: (max/ overstocked) shrimp,10 rasboras, 1 guppy, 3 khuli loaches, 4 Ottos, 88 bladder snails & ramshorn snails.Substrate: 2-3 inches aquasoil and corse sand.A Quiet Win for My Tank and My Wife! Seachem Tidal 55 was an easy replacement for the stock TopFin 20.I upgraded my barely over 1 yr old noisy Top Fin 20 HOB filter to the Seachem Tidal 55 for my 20-gallon hexagon tank, and it’s great! My wife loves the silence—no more rattling to ruin our TV dramas. I can’t even hear it from the couch! It cleared my tank up overnight, leaving the water crystal clear and my fish, shrimp, and snails visibly happier. The flow is adjustable (had to dial it down for my dumbo guppy), and there’s about 30% more media space—I fit all my old media plus the bio-rocks it came with. It’s the same width as the Top Fin 20, so it swapped in easily. Cleaning is a breeze and with the in-tank pump it self primes (less mess and power outage leave of mind). .A solid 5 stars so far for this efficient, quiet filter—my tank’s looking great so far. And I’ll update this if it gives me any trouble. 05.06.2025

Reliable and versatile!
I just put this on my 29 gallon aquarium because their original hang on back filter finally died. I’ve been putting this off for over a year because I also have two Tidal 110’s on a 75 gallon tank that houses 3 red bellied Piranhas. They do such a great job and so easy to maintain. I love the fact that they start back up with no issue if you have a power outage. They do cost a little bit more than average, but I think they are worth it.

Great HOB filter
Great HOB filter. Relatively quiet and has good adjustability. The removable media basket is great and I love that it doesn't use cartridges.

Love this Filter
I had to replace my old filter when the motor just died one day. The last one I bought several years back at one of the big pet chain stores when my other one blew after a lightning strike (yeah, great luck) and I didn't have much time to wait around for one, I needed one ASAP at 8 at night. This time, I was lucky enough to be running two filters at once and the spongefilter was adequate until the new filter arrived so I did my research. I was especially interested in this one as I had already been looking at upgrading from cartridges to reusable media after educating myself on the subject. My old one had a weird shape for the cartridges and I was trying to figure out how I would go about doing so but since this one is made for that type of media, it was a no-brainer.Onto some of my favorites things about this filter:Size & shape. Its so much less bulky than my last one which makes it a lot easier to remove and mess with if I have to. It's not the smallest filter out there of course, but it's a lot better than some of the alternatives. The little tightner thing in the back is also handy, I used to shove a washcloth behind my last one to keep it in place in comparison.Noise. Super quiet, I kept going back to check the first few days that it was actually running.Self-priming. This saves so many headaches. Plus, I don't have to worry so much if we're on vacation or something that our fish will die off from a 2-second electrical blip. I did a big water change recently where it dipped below the filter so I had to unplug it and the self-primer didn't work so I did have to figure out how to take it apart to check on it. I'm used to that from my old filter but this one snapped right back together no problem after I found the issue (hair around the impeller) and then started up as soon as I put it back in.Cleaning. I really love the basket technique. It's a little more time consuming than just popping out a cartridge to rinse/replace, but it also helps keep all the junk inside so it doesn't get all over the place. The snap-on lid for the basket is surprisingly handy for this as well.So yeah, overall I'm really glad I bought this one and wish I had it the last five years instead of struggling with the junky generic one I had been using. Just makes life so much easier.

Fast flow, Loud.
The media could not be loaded. Ran this filter for about two weeks which was as long as I could stand it. Overpriced and over-hyped. The thing isn't very quiet (see video), it has an impeller that's as loud as an air lift and it tinkles water even when the tank is full. It has an 'surface skimmer' that you cannot turn off and does not remove surface skin (though, to be fair, I did cover that intake with a sponge). There are three different places you have to cover in sponge if you have baby fish or shrimp(the secret one is on back side of the filter). It runs too hard to turn down in my 40 breeder. The flow control is a joke because it can only turn the flow up or down by 5-10%. I wouldn't want this in anything smaller than a 75g and for that, I'd want more filter media. I don't know who this filter is made for, but it probably isn't you.
