Castle Art Supplies 120 Oil-based Colouring Pencils Set - with Extras

I have been through quite a few colouring pencils, and having had many of the wax-based CA range, finally have tried the Gold range to see how they compare. In short, the Castle Arts Gold Colouring Pencils have utterly won me over with their remarkable texture, smooth application, and ease of layering. For a longer-form review, I thought it prudent to break down what anyone willing to spend on such a collection might wish to know in detail. They are not a beginner pencil, despite what may be said elsewhere-having had experience of many brands, I would say they are similar in consistency to a Prismacolor but with the saturation of a Derwent Inktense. Easy to use, but if you are chopping and changing between brands on a project it requires a subtly different approach. The texture of the Castle Arts Gold Colouring Pencils is luxurious. The core of each pencil is perfectly soft, even a little crumbly but can hold a strong point well. It strikes the right balance between being firm enough for precise lines and soft enough to lay down vibrant, rich color effortlessly. They are beautifully consistent and dependable. The smooth application of these pencils is a delight to experience. They are oil-blended and you can tell. The colors glide onto the paper as soon as they grace the page. This level of smoothness makes blending and shading a breeze, and the results are always seamless. I find that they blend far easier than their wax counterparts, and within their own category I find them more adaptable than Polychromos. I found it effortless to create gradients and achieve both muted and strident effects with these pencils. One of the most impressive aspects of the Castle Arts Gold Colouring Pencils is their exceptional layering capability. This is an area I admit to struggling with, as I used a variety of paper media with pencils but using CA Gold really gives you room to explore. With each layer, the colors become more vibrant and vivid without causing any waxy "bloom". This is where I believe that they really are not built for beginners- this type of quality is essential for those who love to build up their artwork in layers, allowing for intricate and complex creations. Other Issues: I received the edition with the case - highly recommended also as 120 are too many pencils for a roll, and far too numerous for open storage. Upon arrival the case was storing the additional sketch pads etc, which makes the storage wallet bulge more than advisable but slipped back into shape once they were removed. Three of the 120 had broken cores; but this may have been an issue with transit (My cardboard packaging had been badly torn upon arrival). More of a note than anything else - I ended up making my own swatch, as they are in an unusual order at both ends of the spectrum. It is not a complaint, but I cannot determine the logic to the CA system in this collection-other sets are more traditional and compliant but there is another thought process at work here! I can say that the pencils follow the order of listing on their swatch, are beautifully labelled, easily legible and match their pigment perfectly. In conclusion, the Castle Arts Gold Colouring Pencils are certainly worth it. I have spent less on pencils, but have kept jumping from brand to brand as a result. Until now have never really felt that I had THE set I was happiest with and wanted to share the joyful experience I have had using them. I hope you found this rant useful :)

I have the colour soft aswell. I can say that these seem to have more pigmentation. I also sharpened them in my electric sharpener and they sharpen great. They’re smooth and suitable for children to use aswell. They appear to be presented in a nice case definitely good for a gift. Nice little extras eg sketch pads of all kinds. Impressed as always castle art. Nice edition to my ever growing pencil collection.

I am still learning to draw and these pencils seemed to offer good quality without spending a fortune if my skills do not develop the way I hope. I did prepare a swatch sheet and only had one break out of the 120 and this one sharpened well and seems to be fine now. The range of colours seemed to have a lot of greys but all seem to match the colour on the end quite closely. My lack of experience means I cannot comment fully on the softness of these pencils but they do feel a little like drawing with a softer graphite pencil, a 2B or 3B feel. I have not tried blending and layering yet so cannot really comment on that other than to say that online video reviews suggest they work quite well in these respects. Overall I would say that these pencils are a very good option for anyone on a budget or a beginner like me who does not want to be let down by their equipment without spending a lot on something my skills fail to match.

The quality of the pencils was beyond expectations, and I found them super easy to use and blend together which is essential when creating artworks. I am really pleased that they came inside an amazing quality travel case which stops them from getting damaged when traveling. The set has every colour you could need which makes it a one-time purchase, and the addition of multiple sketchbook and guidebooks were a bonus! Such a fantastic deal, a perfect gift for people at any experience level. Would highly recommend. 😊

Really good range of colours (120 gold set). The pencils are nice to work with, tactile,and look good too. My only tiny gripe is that I had to sharpen every single one of them before use. Also wish the carry bag had a handle on as it's a tad bulky. However it's a good value set especially when you factor in the sketchbooks that are included and the information leaflets.

Wonderful set with a fantastic range of colours. The oil cores are smooth and opulent and layer great. Would highly recommend this product. The case holds the pencils firmly and gives plenty of room to protect the tips. Much easier to use than a tin. The info in pack is really helpful and inspiring and the drawing pads are a very welcome gift. Great quality item, how ever I did receive 2 broken pencils that maybe broken further (out of 120 that’s not too bad). I hope the seller will agree to send replacements if the keep breaking. Also the test card wasn’t in the package, shame as that is very helpful. Still I would purchase again as it is a good quality product.

This is a fantastic looking set, well set out and a good choice and range of colours. The pencils are thick wood, that sit comfortable in the hand because of the size and thickness, creating an easy and smooth flow. Durability is obviously an issue arrived with one of the pencils already having a broken tip which is frustrating because they are advertised as strong and durable, however that could be because of amazon's lack of ability to package products that may have some fragility right, the product came in a flimsy paper bag without any bubble wrap. This is a big pack of colour's so covers a great range, and the colour's can create subtle and sharp images

As an architecture student it is essential to have a good set of workstation tools for all the drawing and sketching I do. When they arrived I was surprised by the size of the set, containing 120 pencils of just about every colour you could ever imagine. After testing them out I found how easy it is to blend due to them being oil based and thanks to the shear volume of colours provided too. I quickly noticed that they did not blunt too easily so will hopefully last for a long time. The additional paper and drawing tips is a great little extra! I would defiantly recommend to any keen drawers looking to utilize their creative spark.

I have had this set for almost a year. I also own the 120 soft (regular wax) colored pencils, watercolor pencils, and the 50 metallic and pastel tint-- all Castle Arts and opted for the zipper case each time. I try to limit my spending on art supplies, as I am not a professional, and mainly use pencils for coloring, which I only do occasionally. So, the fact that I bought every pencil set available in a zipper case speaks to the quality, and amazing presentation of this brand of pencil! They have always come with an instruction booklet, which is individualized for the type of pencil, and is packed with helpful, useful, and informative content (some of it looks to be digitally generated, but I understand that's probably for efficiency purposes and I can overlook that minor issue for the wealth of great tips found in each book). They also have a sample drawing project...with steps to follow...but I haven't tried any of the projects because you'd likely need to be an intermediate artist or better to do those, as steps seem a little vague. Some of the sets came with pads of paper, too. As for these Gold Range pencils, I personally much much prefer the standard, cheaper soft pencil line. That said, I can see why these would be considered the "better" pencil because they're very richly pigmented. You can get some layering and blending effects, but these are like most other pencils labeled as "oil" pencils, they put down a lot of thick color. I feel like I can achieve the subtle, beautiful layering and blending effects with ease using the standard pencils, but really struggle with these. Maybe that's a me problem lol. I am probably doing something wrong, or not willing to venture into chemical solvents or whatever. I do own other "oil" pencils by Marco (Raffine), Shiperr Farben, and Brutfuner/Kalour (f.y.i. Brutfuner a k.a. Kalour et. al. makes the exact same oil pencils and produces them under about a dozen different brand names, so do some research before investing in any of the cheaper, generic pencils if you already own a set, because chances are that you'll just be re-purchading the same pencils). The Castle Arts Gold pencils are comparable if not better than any of these other oil pencils. To clarify, yes oil pencils still have a waxy binder, they just have a different formulation than typical colored pencils. I know what to expect when I open a new package of pencils that are labeled as oil pencils compared to regular pencils. I also wonder why it is that so many of the popular, highly rated generic/ cheap brand pencils are oil pencils lol, but that this set costs more than the other Castle Arts pencils that most people have better results with? As noted, these pencils have very vibrant colors, and lay down well on paper. They have a palette of colors that I like, with more purples and pinks than typical--but I noticed none of the Castle Arts line has really satisfied my needs as far as reds and oranges go. Like there's no good red. Oh well. One last thing I have to say is that I've attempted several coloring book pages with the Gold pencils, even in miniature coloring books, and taken these with me on vacation to try and force myself to use them. I have never finished a page started with these pencils. I've almost always finished the many pages started with the standard Castle Arts pencils!! Just like I almost never use any of the cheaper oil pencils I own. So, if you're on a budget, I recommend getting the other Castle Arts pencils first...or if you already have those, but are unfamiliar with oil pencils, get some of the generic oil pencils like Brutfuner just to be sure that you like this style of pencil before investing in this set. These are good for what they are...just not good for the way I personally know how to color--but, people who don't like muted colored pencils might actually love oil pencils because they lay down richer color!! It's all personal preferences.

Soy una aficionada que acabo de empezar con los lápices de colores, por lo que mis valoraciones no pueden ser muy técnicas. Teniendo esto en cuenta, he de decir que el producto me ha encantado. Tanto el estuche como los lápices llegaron en perfectas condiciones, con un buen embalaje y el envío fue muy rápido. Los colores me parecen geniales. Me gusta la textura y como esta permite hacer mezclas y degradados. Se afilan perfectamente. Por poner un pero al producto, es que, si no me equivoco, no se pueden comprar lápices sueltos para poder ir reponiendo según se van gastando. Estaría genial tener esta opción, ya que siempre se utilizan más unos colores que otros.

Ich war von der Qualität dieser Buntstifte angenehm überrascht. Erst einmal etwas zur Verpackung. Sie wurden in einer sehr praktischen Tasche mit mehreren Fächern geliefert. Innen lagen ein Anleitungsheft mit Beispielen und 4 Din-A-5 Zeichenblöcke à 20 Blatt bei, in den Farben schwarz, weiß, grau und braun, sowie ein Testblatt mit 120 Kästchen, um die Farben auszuprobieren, was sehr praktisch ist. Die Zeichenblöcke waren in der Beschreibung nicht erwähnt worden, stellten also eine angenehme Überraschung dar. In der Mitte der Tasche ist Platz für einen Spitzer. Die Tasche hat außerdem eine Griff, mit dem sie bequem transportiert werden kann. Ein Stift ist leicht beschädigt. Das Holz ist gerissen, was das Anspitzen etwas erschwert, aber nicht unmöglich macht. Wahrscheinlich ein Fabrikationsfehler. Bei zwei Stiften war die Mine innen gebrochen, und ich musste sie deshalb mehrmals neu spitzen, jetzt geht es aber. Die Buntstifte selbst haben eine ausgezeichnete Qualität, die Farben sind sehr schön, gut zu verarbeiten, sehr weich in Gebrauch, aber nutzen sich nicht zu schnell ab und verwischen auch nicht auf dem Papier. Sie lassen sich übrigens auch kaum ausradieren, weshalb sie evtl. für Anfänger nicht so geeignet sind. Ich zeichne zur Zeit sehr viel und brauchte ein professionelles Produkt. Das Preis-Leistungs-Verhältnis ist ausgezeichnet und ich bin rundum zufrieden.

Très très contente de mon achat. Les crayons et la trousse sont arrivés en très bon état. Les crayons sont magnifiques et très bien pigmentés, la pochette est très pratique et de bonne qualité. Les fournitures supplémentaires sont vraiment très appréciables. J'adore ❤️
