The horse- and rider-training handbook of an internationally renowned master horseman. Review: The hook - There are a lot of so called "natural horsemaship" books, dvds etc out there. I was already steered in this direction because my horse is a parelli student, but I usually tend to do my own thing and so, I checked out a few of the other programs out there, and bought this book despite some reviewers opinions about Pat being a great salesman, using terms that didn't need to be used, creating his own language etc. Let me say this.. yes, this book which is relatively inexpensive in the big scheme of how much horse training costs. It is also Pats "hook", or method he uses to spark interest in his program. It works. It is a great overview of the parelli program, but if you are looking for one little book to teach you how to do it, don't waste your money. The books alone, even if you are an experienced horseperson, are not going to give you enough information. If you want to get a feeling for what natural horsemanship is all about, the book will answer the questions you have, and spark some new ones! I have the entire parelli program now, and am going to one of the conferences this year, to see the Pat and his wife Linda in action. The book hooked me! I'm a praelli devotee now, and urge all horse people to give it a try. Its a new way of interacting with horses, that makes it more fun than you can imagine, while stressing safety and savvy around these large, potentially dangerous, but wonderful and beautiful animals. I know.. just drink the cool aid! Robin Review: Parelli has a way with words and horses - good book for new horse owners. Great training for you and your horse.

natural approach to teaching horses
This book covers so much information. It is a guide to the philosophy and practice of natural horsemanship. I have been using this method with all my horses since 1997.

Practical Book
Natural Horse-Man-Ship has its underlying theory but it is a practical book with exercises and list of equipment that will help your horse become more responsive. The exercises have a clear description and are aided by photos. The author also encourages creativity in developing other exercises. There are photos of the easy to make, inexpensive gear. Natural Horse-Man-Ship can be compared to studying the martial arts in that there are many levels and it takes time and practice to master each level. Actually, there are ten levels and the author claims that it takes about 500 hours of working with your horse to master a level. That's between two to five years per level. This book is the basic level and at the end there is a test you can take. Despite the fact that this is the entry-level book the exercises are still very good for all horses. My gelding could already do some things but not others. It will be a while before he learns all in this book. However, I can honestly say that the few exercises I have had time for have helped greatly. My horse seems to be more in tune to what I am asking and is more responsive. I recommend this book to all horse owners.

I love this book
I love this book. I got my first copy as a much less book, photocopied for a class I took at the ranch up in Stockton, I lived in a tent in the field, these were long before the bunkhouses, and any hotels close enough to stay in that weren't filled by the members of the class who had taken time to make reservations..............I brought my dog, and started along.........I was teaching horse handlers for their licensing at the track, and needed some kind of credential for my Native American and just plain ranch kid upbringing..........I was very fortunate over the years to attend classes with some of the greats of horse training, such as Dr. Robert Miller, and some of the mustangers for the Bureau of Land Management............This book gave form and words to explain what I had learned from Native American horse trainers and from relatives who lived on ranches where horses were a part of life................I have to say to every horse loving person, YOU have never lived and loved your horse until that day you ride with NO TACK at all..............I rescued a barrel racing horse with a broken leg...........and after a year, the leg healed and I began her on her journey with me through Natural Horsemanship so she could be a therapy horse in our programs. The day I rode her, with only a string around her lower neck, and just moved my EYES, not even my head, and she did what I asked, I knew she was beyond all those ribbons and trophies and saddles she had won for her previous owners. She was and is my partner, and even after a horrible car accident and no more riding for me.........she has continued to work with other therapists, and me when I can ............and continues to heal veterans and high risk youth and their families...........This book truly helped me on this path..........

Excellent introduction to natural horsemanship.
This book has some key information to begin understanding how we can present ourselves to our horses in a way that can build communication, knowledge, skills, and relationship. It is a jumping off point to natural horsemanship from an inspirational horseman, Pat Parelli. It defines some aspects of horsemanship and is instrumental in starting many people in the direction of natural with horses. Some of the highlights of Natural Horse-Man-Ship include safety aspects, considerations for improved communication to the horse, and goals to try to achieve. It is not intended to tell the whole story, but it does a good job of getting started in that direction. Principles are presented that can be utilized by the reader with imagination toward understanding the needs of the horse. When I read this book the first time many years ago, not much made sense to me, but I began to see where I needed to make some changes. I pursued similar information to find assistance in application. I recommend this book to those getting started in natural horsemanship.

Primer for Natural Horsemanship
If you would like to find out about the Parelli method of Natural Horsemanship (using an understanding of how a horse thinks to train him and form a life-long bond) this is a good place to start. The writing is basic and repetitive, but it definitely gets the concepts across and gives you a blueprint for working with your horse. This is one of Pat's earlier books. Now the Parelli school of training is a world-wide enterprise with slick (and very expensive) training materials. Still, the technique is sound and gets great results!

Thank you Pat Parelli, Kathy Swan and Karen Parelli for an excellent work
I think everyone who is in anyway involved with horses should read this book. It is very well written, in simple systematic approach to help humans to understand what we have to do to help our horses to understand us. I've been training horses for many year and all the information I found in this book I had to learn hard way and it took many tries and errors to get to the point I am now in understanding a horse. This book summarizes years of experience and observation of horses nature and behavior. The book helped me to organize and reinforce my training methods. I very much recommend it, it is very easy and insightful reading. Thank you Pat Parelli, Kathy Swan and Karen Parelli for an excellent work with horses and for trying to help people to be a better horseman.

Excellent and inspiring
Superb I've had horses all my life, but the day I bought a clever mule, who obviously already knew how to outfox people, I thought I needed lo learn more. This book and Raise your hand if you like horses form same writer have been of tremendous help, together with the videos of Ray Hunt, Tom Dorrance, Lorenzo the flying french man, and Emma Massingale. My clever mule and I are now good acquointances and on the way maybe to being best friends : with very little effort and lots of fun on the way. I do not follow every idea of the book scrupulously, but I am marvelled by his way of thinking, and find all his ideas interesting.

Un interesante libro para iniciarte en la doma natural.
Aunque está escrito en inglés es fácil de entender, con explicaciones sencillas y claras. Ideal para empezar a humanizar el entrenamiento y trato de tu caballo.
