The lid is only meant to keep the popcorn in the popper. It rises as the popcorn pops. **Q: how many cups does this popper make** A: I don't know exactly how many cups but I'd say about 7 or 8. I use 1/4 cup popcorn and si.w butter and salt and microwave it. Sometimes I puthink a little more popcorn etc. It turns out great. I love the popcorn popper and how the popcorn turns. You can taste the butter and salt if you add enough. **Q: Does this one come in a box with the features and benefits? It's for a gift, and I won't be there to explain it to the recipient.** A: Yes. It comes in a box with instructions on the box. Not much to remember. I store mine in its box so it's easy to spot in my cupboard. Very giftable! **Q: How much popcorn do i use** A: I use 1/3 cup and it fills the bowl nicely. Use good popcorn. I have used the store brand, Jolly Time and Orville Reddinbacker.
