We’ve heard many a story, shared in frustration, of beloved plants ‘disappearing’ into the ground, without a trace, having been eaten from the roots up by a gopher. Maybe you’ve experienced this very thing or watched a beloved plant suddenly start to die. Taking the extra step to plant in gopher baskets can be easy and worthwhile. Making sure your plants are safe from gopher damage is an easy way to ensure their life as well as your peace of mind.

BEST gopher basket
Much easier to plant in these than the other kind that you have to mold yourself into a basket shape. Far more attractive too with no sharp edges. Customer service tells me this wire should last 10-15 years but they haven't been in business long enough to say for certain. From the looks of the heavy wire and construction the quality is very good, should last a very long time. This is now the only style of gopher cage I buy. Also comes in 1 gallon and 15 gallon. I've purchased both 5 and 15 gallon sizes. When a plant comes out of the plastic container it will slip right into the basket.Another benefit to using this basket is that you use aren't lifting heavy plants in and out of the hole trying to get the plant's crown in line with ground level. Get that worked out first using the basket and then you only have to lift the plant in once.To fully protect a plant from a gopher entering from above ground leave 4" of the basket visible, they won't climb over it. We have so many gophers in our back yard but not one has been able to access our new trees and perennials with these protective baskets. They cost more but I can't be digging up mature plants to replace deteriorated gopher wire so I buy higher quality wire to begin with.Another tip...I bought some trees very young in 5 gallon containers but knowing they will grow much larger I opted for the 15 gallon basket for extra root protection. The 5 gallon baskets were perfect for the roses.

Excellent quality
I just received this 5 gallon wire basket. The quality looks excellent. One of the baskets was slightly bent as a result of shipping, however, not a big deal since it will be almost entirely underground. I recommend using the 5 gallon baskets not just for 5 gallon plants but also for 1 gallon plants. You’ll have to dig a bigger hole, but the plants will have more room for roots to expand before reaching the perimeter of the basket.

Good for protecting sprinklers from squirrels too
I bought these to discourage the squirrels from gnawing more holes in my plastic sprinkler risers and nozzles. I put them upside down over the sprinklers and stake them down with a couple of tent stakes. My plants are getting plenty of water still and I've seen that the squirrels are now drinking from my bird bath.
