    Cute book for lower elementary students

My students are liking this book with a fun boy as the featured character.  I find it a little excessive with some unnecessary side things included that do not push the plot forward.  After making some judicious cuts and modifying some sections it is easier to comprehend and more interesting for my first and second grade read-aloud sessions.

I originally bought this a., because I've followed the illustrator for a while, and b., because my kid's name is Jasper (especially b.)  I was surprised and very pleased to find that this is one of the most nuanced, complex-without-being-complicated books for kids I've ever encountered.  The situations and the characters have a great deal of depth, yet the writing is clear and easily understood even by my four-year-old.Highly recommended.
