This is Replica 5’’ Sundial Compass, this type of Sundials Used in Europe and England since the 1500's they crossed the Atlantic with early explorers of the Americas. The sundial and the compass are two completely different instruments, built for different purposes. The sundial is an instrument designed for a specific location on earth and permanently installed there, on which the shadow of one of its parts indicates the hour of the day (while the sun is up and making shadows). The compass is an instrument used for navigation. It includes a free-floating magnetized component which, when held level and still, aligns itself with the earth's magnetic field and in doing so, points approximately north. A sundial compass is a portable sundial attached over a compass via a hinge. There are some adjustable legs that need to be used to level the instrument if not on level ground. The gnome is hinged and needs to be put in the up position where it locks into place. There should be what looks like a protractor that is to the right of the gnome that is on a hinge. That to needs to be flipped up as well. The protractor is used to set the sundial to the correct latitude angle. The compass is to find true north based off of the area's magnetic north declination. Once the instrument has been leveled, set to the correct latitude, and to true north just observe the shadow that is cast on to the sundial's face by the gnome. For those in the southern hemisphere, everything is the same except you will want to find true south instead. Approximate Size: - 12.5cm - Dia x 5cm - High (Sundial Compass) 13cm - L x 13cm - W x 6cm - H (Box) BRAND-MAH

This compassion is exquisite and beautiful!
This is meant to be a gift, so I do not know how to use it! Some instructions would be helpful.

Good Quality, Functionality and Beauty
PROS: Definitely is real, solid brass (as a jeweler, I would know), Product matches photo, accurate colors and materials, Intricately and handsomely stylized, Serial number engraved on device, 3 adjustable feet and circular leveler to ensure proper level. Handsome box has handmade inlay work. Inside the box are elaborations and directions engraved on a brass plate. There's a knob that secures the compass needle so it doesn't get damaged during shipping. Bravo!. I confirmed accuracy of the compass against 2 others I have. The box and the device are engraved with the company name, etc. All together this is clearly a very special piece. As a surprise, this came with a free gift from the manufacturer of a pocket watch compass with a plain silver casing, perfect for engraving - which I plan to do. This was shipped via FedEx with tons of layers of bubble wrap then inside a box that was taped so well it was hard to open (which is a good thing). It was to the point of overkill - which I really appreciated.CONS: The patina applied to make it look antique is a little overdone. I am debating cleaning it up but likely wont since doing that would degrade its worth. When moving the parts open and close, the operation isn't as smooth as I expected it to be. At points it gets a little caught up when moving.***This is a wedding anniversary present for my husband who mentioned months ago he would love to have something like this. I can't wait to see his face when he opens this! :)

Beautiful
I purchased this as a gift for Christmas for my brother who just got a sailboat. Aside from the fact that it is a functional item, the main reason I purchased this was for sentiment. He was beyond happy with this item and could not stop showing others how well made it was. I am not sure what he liked more, the item or the beautiful leather sachel/box I came in. If you are on the fence, get this! I think in all my brothers 40 years this is the most cherished gift that I have ever given him. He has already taken it with him, wish I had snagged photos of the item and box, well done guys!

Wonderful piece
Outstanding quality and weight. I was honestly surprised at the craftsmanship, I am very pleased with the compass. The balance, mechanisms, compass and utilities all work and function as needed. The box it arrives with is unique and very well made. I highly recommend!!

Absolutely nostalgic
There's NOTHING about this piece I don't like. The wooden box comes with an interior liner and two brass plates (Front ext and top int). There's another on the sun dial itself. The brass was a little tarnished (as brass typically does in time), but nothing a homemade concoction couldn't take care of. I like that the legs are adjustable with a few turns of three knobs, if you so choose to display it on a flat surface (out of the box). The compass- fully functional with a turn of a tension knob on its underside, The entire piece is reminiscent of a time long ago. Makes a great 1st year anniversary gift, or for a kiddo going off to college or for mere adornment. No regrets here! Great buy!

Surprisingly good
Bought this as a gift for my time-obsessed father. He has dozens of old clocks around his house, but nothing like this.Craftsmanship is surprisingly good, although I wasn’t expecting much. The wooden storage box is quite nice and sturdy and the timepiece looks decent. It’s not meant to keep accurate time, but as an interesting nic-nac for someone who likes clocks, it’s a nice gift.

This was a very nice piece! I ordered it for a Father’s Day gift so I haven’t seen it actually all the way open. But when it came, I had to open and see what it looked like. Came wrapped in a lot of bubble wrap, and the box is definitely real wood. The compass is wrapped in allot of plastic as well, and I didn’t feel like taking the plastic off and putting it back so I left it alone. But from what I saw of it, It’s a beautiful piece. Can’t wait to give it to him for Father’s Day. Thanks allot!!

IT made for a great gift
I bought it for a Christmas gift. Wonderful, unexpected, not the run of the mill and opens up a world of stuff that is out of the ordinary.
