Fantastic book on a very famous 917. Every detail, every driver of the first Le Mans winning Porsche. Great format, excellent quality & outstanding photos. A lot of the background history of the model, make and times will not be new to most 917 fans, but if you love the car you will love this "Autobiography" (not Sutobiography as the listing misspells!)

Well written, wonderful photographs, an obviously exhaustive level of research resulting in a thoroughly enjoyable book. Kudos to the author, Ian Wagstaff, for a masterful telling of the story of 917-023, the first Porsche to be the overall winner of LeMans. It quickly has become my favorite Porsche book.

Freuen wir uns heute, wenn jeweils drei Werkswagen von Porsche und Audi in Le Mans aufeinandertreffen, so sah das 1970 doch noch erheblich eindrucksvoller aus: sieben Porsche 917 traten gegen nicht weniger als elf Ferrari 512 S an. Und wie in der kompletten Saison 1970 mit Ausnahme der 12 Stunden von Sebring zeigte Porsche den Ferrari auch in Le Mans, wo der Hammer hing. Nachdem sich die 512 S in mehreren Unfällen selbst aus dem Rennen gekickt hatten, feierte Porsche einen Dreifachsieg mit zwei 917 auf den ersten beiden Plätzen. Das siegreiche Fahrzeug mit der Nummer 23, eingesetzt von Porsche Salzburg, wurde von Hans Herrmann und Richard Attwood gefahren.Die vollständige Geschichte dieses Wagens lebt in diesem begeisternden Band wieder auf. Ian Wagstaff, ein hochdekorierter britischer Motorsport-Journalist, spannt den Themenkreis allerdings noch erheblich weiter, wie das Inhaltsverzeichnis verdeutlicht. Das opulente Werk ist in sieben Teile mit insgesamt 22 Kapiteln untergliedert. Einer Darstellung der frühen Porsche-Rennhistorie folgt eine ausführliche Dokumentation aller Renneinsätze des 917-023 - natürlich mit Le Mans 1970 als Höhepunkt. Anschließend widmet sich der Autor der weiteren Entwicklung des Porsche-Sports bis zum 919 Hybrid, bevor zwei Abschnitte sämtliche Fahrer und Teams des 917-023 würdigen. Auch die spätere Nutzung des 917-023 in privater Hand im historischen Motorsport bis heute findet in dem Buch ihren Niederschlag. Den Abschluss bildet eine Wiedergabe der Technik dieses legendären rot-weißen Le Mans-Siegers im Detail, knapp im Text, ausführlich und faszinierend in der fotografischen Darstellung.Ian Wagstaff und Porter Press ist hier ein wirklich lohnendes Buch gelungen. Die Texte sind erkennbar Ergebnis sorgfältiger Recherchen, die Illustration ist mit 380 Fotografien überaus reichhaltig und von der Bildauswahl und der Reproduktion in teilweise großem Format begeisternd. Dies gilt sowohl für die unvergessliche Erinnerungen zutage fördernden Rennaufnahmen als auch für die Ablichtungen technischer Details. Die Biografien der sieben Piloten, die sich im Renneinsatz am Steuer von 917-023 betätigten – Hans Herrmann, Richard Attwood, Vic Elford, Kurt Ahrens, Denny Hulme, Gérard Larrousse und Gijs van Lennep – sind ausführlich und berücksichtigen die Leistungen dieser Fahrer auch außerhalb des Porsche 917.Es gibt bereits zahlreiche sehr empfehlenswerte Bücher über den Porsche 917, dieser herrliche neue Band zum 917-023 reiht sich da würdig ein und gehört in die Bibliothek jedes Porsche-Enthusiasten.

'A book which does justice to its subject' is a cliché but this one deserves the description. An 'autobiography' of one chassis which took part in only seven races sounds a dubious prospect at first. But what a treat it is ! I could go on to describe the book in detail but really - if you 'were there' ( like I was, at Brands in 1970 ) the entire book allows you to wallow in nostalgia. If you weren't, but want to know why the 917 is such a legend, you'll find out here. Everything about motor sport was different back then , and the author cleverly weaves the story of 917-023 into a history of early '70s International sports car racing. The best of the book, though, is the production quality - quite superb. The photo reproduction is excellent, and is rounded off by a 'walk round' chapter of the car today by ace classic car photographer James Mann. An essential purchase for the enthusiast - the only thing which could have made it better would have been a CD of 917 exhaust noise..............

A comprehensive and highly entertaining account of the story of this historic car. I was fortunate enough to be at Le Mans in 1970 to witness Porsche's first outright victory with this car. The memory has stayed with me all these years, but brought to light so vividly by this tome. Thoroughly recommended to anyone who has a passion for 917-023.

Although I have several books on the Porsche 917, this one offers a unique perspective by highlighting one specific car. It may not be the book offering the most comprehensive history of the 917, but it offers an almost personal touch, that none of the other titles do. In addition this is another gorgious Porter Press production; superb quality in all aspects: images, choice of paper and binding, lay-out, etc. Well done!

Excellent production values. Sets the standards that other publishers can only hope to achieve. Great book. Great story. Greatest racing car of the 20th Century.
