Q: Can the loom stand up i dependently on its own while weaving ?

No. I have a larger loom and bought this to use for when I travel. Tried warping it and weaving on it several times. Did not like it at all! Anyone who is new to weaving and buys this will be discouraged from ever weaving again. I suggest you don't buy it. I trashed mine as I didn't want anyone - adult or child - to think this was what weaving is like. Find a good loom. Research Rigid Heddle looms. You can find used ones sometimes for not too much. Sorry this answer wasn't what you were hoping for. I hope you find a loom for you and take up weaving! My husband and I both love it!!

Q: What is the part in the middle for?

The bar in the middle is used to separate every other thread and make it easier to pass the shuttle through. Directions are somewhat confusing and construction of the loom is shoddy. Don't buy it.

Q: What size weft yarn works best for this? #3 ? #2 ? any recommendations for some i can buy here on amazon? i'd like to get a slightly fuzzy type that

I used sport weight yarn, you can find some fuzzy types in that. The heddle bar worked better for one direction that the other and all is time consuming although I got some good results with strict attention to detail.
