I don't, and I've never had an egg explosion. I always prep a bowl of cold water before hand, to cool off the eggs off after steaming. I rarely have any problems removing the egg shells, it just takes a few moments. **Q: My water measuring cup print smeared off. I never scrubbed or washed it harshly. Has anyone experienced this defect?** A: Mine is still intact, but honestly I don’t even look at the measurements as I think they are not correct. I usually just fill the cup to the top with the water and put it in the receptacle. Don’t worry about it! The measurements are totally off anyway! **Q: New purchase. Any tips on best way to use to hard boil eggs?** A: The directions that come with the 3-in-1 are very easy to follow. The buzzer will go off when it is ready based on the amount of water. The bottom of the water cup has a tiny nail to poke a small hole in each egg before cooking. This will keep the egg from breaking during cooking. When the eggs are done, put them in the refrigerator to cool enough to peel. Eggs cooked in the 3-in-1 are so easy to peel. **Q: Does this shut off automatically when eggs are done?** A: No it doesn't shut off automatically. At this price I wasn't expecting much but I've used Hamilton Beach products before and liked all of them. First of all, it's small. I mean really small and that's a plus because it takes so little space in the kitchen. It looks kind of cool as well (modern if you will). I've only had it for 2 days and I have not tried the poacher but it cooked hard boiled eggs to perfection. I filled the plastic goblet to the #4 level of water for 3 hard boiled eggs and they turned out perfect the first time. Time for cooking 3 eggs was exactly 12 minutes from plugging the unit on until the audible alarm sounded indicating that the cooking was done (it's not really an alarm but more like a small bell sound and it should be louder IMHO). On the stove top, I would have to wait at least 8-9 minutes just for the water to boil and another 10 minutes for the eggs to cook so I figure this little gadget is a good time saver. It's super easy to clean as well. The instructions are clear. On the bottom of the water goblet, there is a plastic cap that can be removed revealing a steel pin. There is absolutely no mention of this or its purpose in the instructions in English or French. One small observation about the unit : It mentions in the instructions to plug it in and then switch it on and off after use. On mine the switch seems to do nothing. If I plug it in, the red light automatically lights up and the unit starts. When the bell rings, the light stays on even if I push the switch to turn the power off. I simply unplug it when the bell rings to indicate that there is no water left in the tray. Is the switch faulty ? I don't know.
