    First I wash them to remove residue

I found that whatever substance used on these to make them will leave a residue on the glass chimney. So I washed them in hot water then alcohol to remove it. So now the wick transports oil up faster to the flame and the flame burns cleaner without a film fogging up  the glass chimney.
