A Daughter’s Return: a gripping family drama from the Sunday Times bestselling author

It held my interest.
I enjoyed this novel by Josephine Cox and hesitated between 4 and 5 stars. Florence Stanville decided to return to Guisethorpe on the east coast of England following the death of her beloved mother and the marriage of her only daughter. She feels drawn back to this peaceful place, having spent a small part of her childhood there. She is also unsettled by a remark made by her dying mother. Florence is initially alienated by the interest shown in her by local people and some interaction with a thoroughly unpleasant cafe owner but she soon makes new friends and finds new interests in her new environment. The characters are very well drawn, so much so that I felt I knew them. I also felt that I had visited Guisethorpe. There is a nice balance in the novel between everyday life and some unexpected events, as well as the solving of the mystery hinted at by her mother. I was sad to discover that Josephine Cox has passed away.

Good read
Florence has not had a great success with marriage but does have a daughter who she is proud of. The daughter has recently married and Florence’s mum has died so Florence feels ready for a change. Florence feels drawn to go and live in a little east coast village where she lived with her mum when she was a young child. Something her mum has said to her as she died makes Florence feel that her mum may have been keeping something secret from her and hopes that her childhood home might hold some clues to her past.Josephine Cox always writes good stories and this one is definitely worth reading

The end of an era.
I consider it an honour and a privilege to have managed to read every one of Josephine Cox books. Every time I finished one book, I awaited eagerly for the next one. Now I feel desolate that there will be no more. She always quickly drew me into her new characters like being welcomed into a new family. I laughed, cried, worried about them, then was delighted when everything turned out right for them. This last book is a fitting end to a wonderful, talented, caring person. My favourite author of all time. My thanks goes to all the people who had faith in her and helped her achieve her dreams, especially Gillian Middleton. I loved this story and will recommend it to all my dear friends who are also avid Josephine Cox fans.

Slow storyline
I found this book particularly slow and definitely on the dull side. I liked some of the characters but again I felt some of the characters were pointless.
