Could the 6 gauge be used wrapped around a tree as a squirrel baffle? I don't want to use metal.

I don't think it deter a squirrel, their claws would be able to grab the vinyl and they could climb. You might try thin aluminum flashing. The tree would be able expand and not be damaged and the squirrel would slip and not be able to climb.
