Good quality product but doesn't seem to serve the purpose it is for.
The discs are of good quality and have clear reflective surfaces. However it doesn't seem to be working towards scaring the pigeons away. Initially they seemed to work as the pigeons were hesitant of coming near the new reflective item they saw, and would fly away, but then they got used to it! So now they are back and perhaps think it is some sort of Christmas decoration!!๐

Even though it turned out I didn't have a bird problem at all (darn bunnies!), it's clear to me that this product works about as well as it could, if you use it properly. First, it's important to understand that there's nothing "magic" about it--it's not that birds have some instinctual terror of shiny objects. So how do I know it works? Because it works on ME. When I'm out in the yard, the combination of the motion in my peripheral vision and the rustling noise they make frequently makes me look up to see what's there (e.g. neighborhood cat, skunk, etc.). Birds would certainly experience the same effect. Of course, birds aren't dumb, and they would quickly realize there wasn't something dangerous for them there if they stick around. But that doesn't solve the problem for them--if they can't tell the rustle and motion from a potential predator, they need to assume it's a potential predator each time it startles them, or risk getting eaten. If they really, really want what's in your garden, they may still risk it, but it remains a risk in a way that, e.g., a scarecrow does not. So the key is to hang the tape in a way that it can flutter in the wind. Attaching it to a nearby wall or fence wouldn't work very well, both because the wind couldn't catch them and because they wouldn't create as powerful an illusion of a critter moving around in the garden. My solution was to hang strips from my tomato cages, and that's pretty much ideal. If you don't have something like the cages, I'd think stringing a piece of clothesline over your garden and hanging them from that would also work well. Incidentally, the stuff is "tape" in the same sense as "measuring tape" or "video tape"--it's a long ribbon wound on a roll. I've seen some reviews that expected it to be adhesive tape, which it's not, and which would also be a terrible idea, because it would quickly get attached to itself and stop working. To attach it to the cages, I just folded one end around the cage wire and then used Scotch tape to seal the loop--Scotch tape sticks to it very well, and my strips have held up to some strong (gale force?) winds this season. The stuff is actually pretty durable considering how easily it snaps around in the wind. I don't think each strip should be expected to last for multiple seasons, but there's a lot on a roll. That's why I give it five stars: it's not going to stop really determined birds. But I just can't imagine a deterrent of this kind that would work any better--it simulates a critter well enough to continually fool me (only for a moment each time, but that's enough!), and it's sturdy enough to last a season. If you REALLY need to keep all the birds out, you'll need netting, but in many cases this should do the trick.
