Does this thing get plugged in the wall or how does this work?

It has a USB power cord. That can be connected to the laptop or to a separate USB power supply. It has 2 USB ports built into the thing. If you connect the platform to your laptop, you should be able to use those for 2 peripherals, as if your laptop had an extra USB port. If you power it via a separate USB power supply, you will double the number of USB ports for power, BUT those devices will not be connected to your laptop.
