Natural is the way to go!
First of all, let's get this out of the way. This is NOT a dye! If you've been dying your hair for years or even decades, don't expect this to be anything like a chemical dye. Think of it more like a mud mask that stains your hair. This will not look like a dye, it will not go on like a dye and it will not rinse out like a dye. But that's OK, it really is. The trade off is it doesn't smell like chemicals, it doesn't burn your skin and it doesn't ruin everything it plops on the minute it lands! Plus it adds a little something extra to the color that I can't quite define. I absolutely recommend doing the allergy and strand test. Only for the strand test I would recommend following the same curing step as for the actual application. Then go ahead and cake it on, like you will for your whole head application. When I did the strand test, I was disappointed. It didn't look like it would do much for my hair. But for the full application, I let the henna cure for 1 hour as suggested in the instructions, then left it on my head for 1 hour, applying heat with a hair dryer as instructed. The result was fabulous! This gave my hair a shine and dimension not possible with chemical dyes. As I said in the beginning, you should be aware that this is not your traditional dye. It is gritty like a mud mask. (Actually its very much like what comes out of a babies hinnie, but I'm too much of a lady to say it!)This won't apply like a traditional dye. My daughter (who's 16) who applies my dye when I'm too busy or broke to visit my hair dresser, moaned and groaned for about the first five minutes then finally got the hang of it when she accepted it wasn't going to go on like a traditional dye and changed her application method. I'm not sure I could have applied it myself. She spent about an hour just getting it on, then another ten or so minutes working it into my hair and making sure everything was covered. I don't think I'll be asking my regular beauty technician to take this on. All in all, the process took 3 to 3 1/2 hours. 1 hour to mix the henna and let it cure, 1 hour to apply , 1 hour to cure on my head (don't forget to heat your head up with a blow dryer every 10 minutes or so!) and half and hour to rinse (Rinse once, put in conditioner, let that sit for 10 to 20 minutes, then rinse again.)So don't think you can slap this stuff on in an afternoon. Make sure you give yourself plenty of time. I'd set aside half a day, especially if this is your first time. Oh, one more thing you should know. Since this is not a chemical dye, it will not erase roots! You know, that line of demarcation you get when your hair is dyed a completely different color than it was meant to be. I'm a dark brown with chemically altered red, so my dark brown roots pop up after about 2 weeks. This won't completely erase them like a chemical dye would. But it will blend them in. Also, if your a blonde or a lighter brown, I would urge caution! If this took so well on my hair, I would think it would take even more on lighter hair! You may want to pay close attention on that strand test and maybe not let it cure so much. Also, I noticed that this color (bright red) had a lot of orange in it, which my dark hair can take and in fact, I think its that orange that gives my hair that extra dimension I was talking about. However, my guess would be that on lighter hair, that orange my be more prevalent than anyone would desire. In fact I'm planning on stepping down to red instead of the bright red on my next purchase. Bottom line is, this is natural and worth the work! I plan on using this from now on. Besides, it appeals to my inner hippie!

Henna Better Than Hair Dye
This arrived very quickly and I'm glad it comes in packs of 3 which is about what I might use in a year. It can be hard sometimes to find the Bright Red rather than just the Red and I like the color of the Bright Red better. If you've never used henna, it is good for your hair as opposed to hair dye which is bad for your hair and, eventually, makes it dry and brittle. I switched to henna some years ago and it is nice to use, if a teensy bit more effort. The box contains a plastic bag of the dry henna (always check the name of the color on the bag), and the instruction book with two plastic gloves and a plastic bag to cover your head attached to the instructions. If doing this for the first time, its a good idea to read the instructions before beginning. I'd recommend curing the henna before using as it means you can leave it on your hair less time to get a nice effect. Also, be sure to use distilled water and let no metal at all come in touch with the henna. It feels like clay when you put it on and it's a good idea to have some paper towels around to wipe off the counter and your skin once you're done putting the henna in your hair and have the plastic cap on. Then wrap the cap in a towel and find something to do (tv or book) for about an hour. Your hair will feel a bit course after you wash out the henna, but that will go away after the first shampoo. I'd recommend waiting to shampoo the first time, though, until the next day and expect some more color to come off your hair at that time. It takes a couple of good rinses to get all of the henna out. The color will fade faster than hair dye, but its so much better for your hair and scalp that its well worth it. You can also add some items to help it look more red and to make the henna smell nicer--like paprika or ginger, etc. The instructions will tell you what you can add for different colors. You can also make an event out of hennaing your hair, by inviting over friends to also henna their hair...that way you can all help each other get the henna on and off again and chat while waiting for it to set.

My henna brand for life!
I started using this brand when I got pregnant with my first kiddo because I was not comfortable with chemical dye, but I have some gray peppered in at my roots and temples and really wanted a change. I love the way this smells and feels, and the application has gotten so much easier after several years of perfecting my technique! I love massaging in the warm henna pudding and wrapping my head in cellophane for an hour or two, but I've gotten great results with as little as 45 minutes. I get compliments ALL THE TIME, and my new stylist asked if I was a natural redhead. She told me she wouldn't know where to begin to get the color this henna has given me! It truly sparkles in the sunlight, and the layers of red just look natural and rich. In these photos, I'd used the Bright Red color. I went to a very chic stylist in Chicago between pregnancies a couple years ago to try and get back to chemical dye, as I was considering adding some funky colors. She tried to get me back to a baseline red, and I have to say, it was nowhere near as gorgeous as this henna makes my hair, and cost me about 100x as much (and the stylist knew it when she saw her color). Apparently she had seen some serious damage from lower quality indigo hennas in other clients and was convinced my hair would turn green or fall out, but I wasn't a bit surprised that this henna didn't react negatively to chemical dye. Still, I couldn't wait for it to grow out so I could go back to henna. I've read it's okay to do henna over dye, but not dye over henna. I'll never go back to chemical dye again, even if I go totally gray. I'll keep adjusting the colors if I need to, cause it's Light Mountain henna for life for me!

Never Going Back Again
I have the coloring of a redhead -- pale skin and billions of freckles -- but my hair is naturally a kind of mousy brown. I used to color my hair with your standard issue Clairol et al, but it made my scalp SUPER sensitive and reading the ingredients on the box made my head hurt. So I began looking for a natural alternative that would still give me the red color I desired without frying my scalp and potentially flooding my body with all sorts of corrosive chemicals. I heard about henna from a friend and decided to give it a whirl. I first tried Light Mountain's plain Red shade, but didn't think it gave my hair enough of a red color -- it was more of a dark auburn than red. So I decided to give Bright Red a try and it was perfect! Rather than wiping the slate clean each time you apply it, henna adds to itself. I've colored my hair three times with this now and each time, the end result is a little different, but still a color I love. The color doesn't fade and it has a sort of natural, subtle ombre effect. My hair looks so much more "alive" with the subtle color differences, not to mention the shine and body the henna gives it. My suggestions: * WEAR GLOVES. If you don't, you'll end up looking an Oompa Loompa, I promise. You will also want to "grease" your hairline and ears with petroleum jelly, Vaseline, or olive oil to prevent the henna from dying those bits as well. * This is going to smell super earthy -- like a combination of wet dirt and hay -- so I add a bit of essential oils to the mix. Tea tree oil is currently my favorite. Peppermint oil made my head feel extra warm and my scalp felt like it was burning towards the end. * The instructions tell you to use water to mix the henna, but when I did, I didn't feel like it added any color at all. I've since had much better luck by using apple cider vinegar to mix the henna. * The instructions will also tell you that the dye only needs to sit for a couple of hours before using it, but again, I didn't feel like it added any color. I highly recommend letting it sit overnight before using. The acidic apple cider vinegar + the longer sit time = more dye release, which means more color transfer. * I like to experiment with additions. My favorite at the moment is a mix of paprika and cayenne pepper. I haven't figured out the exact perfect amount since I just eyeball it every time. And if the end result isn't what you were going for, you can mix up another batch and try again!

Light Mountain never fails!
This is my second time using Light Mountain and it does a great job of covering my greys. I get a mix of copper and burgundy and I absolutely love it.

Great Base Henna
This is a good, really effective henna that you can customize to your liking. Obviously, it's gonna be a bright red, so you should be expecting that. But it's plain henna so I can use all my little tips and tricks to play with the color/conditioning, and not worry about the price like I do when I use Lush hennas (also a great choice, but more expensive.) I have dark brown hair, so most of my experimentation revolves around trying to amp up the red color so I can get a nice auburn rather than just a cinnamon brown. My hair is also thick and oily, and likes to fry with normal hair dyes (which I have used TWICE in my life and I will never again). Henna is great for a natural coloring to your hair that will leave it healthier versus fried and sad. Plus, since it will wash out in 3-4 months, you don't really need to worry about redoing your roots. Just redo the henna. Tips I like to use: Let it sit for 2+ hours (this will help reduce down the time you need it on your hair, helps unlock the red color) Use hibiscus-based tea (for red color) Lemon juice (Lightens, but also be careful as this will dry out your hair) Coconut oil (Another conditioner) Smooth it over your head and wrap it in plastic wrap. I've slept in it a few times, wrapping a towel around my head and my pillow, but this can be uncomfortable. I prefer now to let it sit for the 2+ hours and then keep it in my hair for about 3 hours during the daytime. This does also have the benefit of you being able to blast it with the hair dryer now and then (thru the plastic wrap) to increase the heat. Heat will help with the red tones and lock them into your hair for a longer-lasting shade. Anyway. For the price, you can definitely afford to experiment on your own for your own perfect henna cocktail.

Been using this for over ten years now to cover grey!
I have had many people ask me about using Henna so I thought that I would write a review. I am 44 now and have been using this same product for 10+ years. My normal hair color is a very dark brown to almost black with an auburn highlight but in my early 30's I started turning prematurely grey. This shade of henna is perfect for my dark hair and the more grey it turns naturally, the more red it gets with the henna which I really like. It restores the shine and luster to my hair, it makes it softer and I have never had any damage of any kind from using it as it is a 100% chemical free product. Yes henna is messy but for those of us who refuse to use chemicals, it is the best way to go. I normally mix mine with one egg and sometimes a bit of paprika but using it all by itself will work wonders also. I would like to add that with very dark hair this shade of bright red will just add a reddish tint and beautiful shine. Naturally if your hair is a lighter shade or if there is any grey in it, those strands will turn a deep red. I suggest as most of the other ladies on here do, to do a strand test first. I normally treat my hair with one box every 12 weeks because I have very long hair and I normally wash it only twice a week. I apply it to my hair while wearing latex gloves and then cover it with a shower cap for two to three hours. Something else that I have noticed is that gals who use chemical hair colors a lot of times have a strange bluish hue to their hair when it is in direct bright light. With henna, the glow is very natural and not fake looking. I hope that this helps some of you out!

A wonderful product
My husband had been urging me for some time to try using henna products. I love the color red for my hair but most chemical red dyes wash out very quickly. So, I tried the henna. I must say that henna is an interesting experience. We followed the package instructions to the letter to make sure we got the best results. I am happy with the outcome but I feel compelled to inform potential buyers of a few things: 1. This product is MESSY! Make sure you are using old garments when you apply and put newspaper on the floor. Be sure to apply vaseline around your hairline and wash up promptly after applying to prevent staining of your countertops, sink and flooring. 2. Make sure you have a bottle of distilled water on hand. Also set aside plastic/glass bowls and spoons for mixing. You cannot use any metal products in the preparation or mixing of this product. 3. It takes a while for the henna to set. Be sure you are setting aside plenty of time to allow the product to work. I left it on my hair for almost 2 hours for good coverage. 4. When you first wash the henna out, DO NOT BE DISMAYED with the color you have. It can take up to 3 full days for the product to oxidize and mature into the actual color it will be. For this reason, you may want to do your first application on a weekend when you are not planning to do much. I have noticed immediately that my hair is MUCH softer and is full of body. I didn't have any color stains on my pillow from the dye and other than a mossy, earthy smell left from the henna I had no obnoxious odors, a facet of this process that my husband LOVED. I will be using henna products exclusively in the future. I am very happy with the results, even if the process is a lot more intensive than what I have been used to. An item that was not included in the kit I bought was an applicator bottle. It would be helpful for root application to invest in one for yourself.

Rich colour! Love the product!
I like this brand as it’s a bit deeper red than orange. Read about henna before you buy! It kills me when I read reviews of people complaining henna is messy and makes hair dry. It might feel dry if you don’t add some oils and that feeling goes away in a few days. It doesn’t actually dry your hair... I love henna for my hair, it removes dandruff, makes strand stronger, hair much healthier than before!

Good
It started out very bright and faded to a regular henna colour, pretty much the exact same shade as Lush caca rouge colour gave me. It makes me wonder if they added some kind of dye... that would suck because the whole point of henna for me is that it's natural. I like how easy it was to mix, unlike solid henna blocks. It did its job, but I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 because I read on some forum that Light Mountain Naturals is not guaranteed to be pure or regulated, and that's kind of scary. I just want pure, plain old henna, no metallic salts etc. So it's hard to know about that purity stuff, but either way it got the job done so thumbs up.
