A World Undone: The Story of the Great War, 1914 to 1918

I first stumbleded upon this book when I was about 17 years old, specifically I bought the audiobook version on audible. The audiobook is narrated by the late Robin Sachs. Not only does he do the book justice, but the way he narrates the book also leaves the impression that he honors the great tradgedy that is the First World War and the events described in this book. After many years of listening to this book, I decided it was time to get a physical copy. When I read it now, I read it in the voice of Robin Sachs and it makes the book all the better for it.

Spannendes Buch

I bought this book because other reviewers indicated it as the best introduction to WWI -- and indeed it is! Previously I had tried a couple of other books on the subject, but they were taking too much for granted and weren't giving me enough background information that would allow me to understand why certain things happened in the way they did. "A World Undone", on the other hand, does an excellent job at providing this type of information: every second chapter is a "Background" chapter that zooms in on one particular character or aspect of the war, dissecting its causes and explaining its consequences. Additionally, the book is very well written and engaging. Having said this, I feel I must clarify a couple of things: - In the reviews on Amazon.com someone was recommending the purchase of the print copy rather than the Kindle copy because otherwise it would be difficult fully to enjoy the maps within the book. Well, this is the only reason why I bought the print copy rather than the Kindle one, and I am doubly disappointed. First of all, the pages started coming off the binding almost immediately, and by now there are some 100 of them that came off. I am not sure how I am going to be able to glue them back to the spine of the book. Secondly, the maps in the book are not that many, and they're not that unmissable either, so I really wish I had purchased the Kindle copy of this book rather than the print copy. - The book itself, while being great, has its limitations. While the Western front is covered in great detail, the battles on the Eastern front are only sketched, and the ones on the Southern front are barely mentioned at all. This is understandable in a book that aims at being merely an introduction, however be aware that your knowledge of how the war will be far from complete after you've read it.

Literally the complete history of Great war. Narration is engaging. Didn't failed to highlight the politics among the generals. If you want to know the complete details of world War this is the Goto book.
