does this filter reduce the tds ( total dissolve solids) in the water?

It can lower the TDS a bit, but nothing substantial. TDS are typically smaller than 2 microns so you would normally need a reverse osmosis system or something similar to effectively filter TDS. No shower filters are effective for TDS because if we used the very small micron filters that are required to filter TDS, the water pressure would be dramatically decreased. In other words, you'd barely get wet. Our shower filter is much better at filtering chlorine, chlorine byproducts, VOC's, heavy metals, etc.

What is the media filtering the recycled tap water? ie., activated alumina / activated charcoal / zeolite / kdf 55 or kdf 85?

The AquaYouth 2.0 utilizes a dual 5 micron PP filter, coconut shell activated carbon, and ceramic balls.

When I'm done showering, the filter canister has water in it. Would emptying the canister and letting the filter dry out add life to the filter?

These filters have been designed to have some residual water left in the housing after each shower. Nearly all water filters function this way. The only time we would recommend emptying the water would be if you knew the shower wouldn't be used for an extended period, then that might be worthwhile.
