The bike came with the chain on it, so if you wanted to use it as a balance bike, you would need to take the chain off. It seems to be a pretty good bike. It doesn’t have a chain guard so if it’s for a small child, make sure they don’t have baggy pants on or bare feet. You cannot pedal backwards to stop it just spins when you pedal backwards it has a hand break only.

We purchased the bike on July 1st and our 3 year old learned right away from balance bike to pedals without training wheels. Unfortunately, now it’s September, has been 2 months and can’t return and the chain literally pops off every single time. He can’t ride anywhere and it’s become dangerous too. I wish there was a way to return it, the chain is way too defective.
