Bloomsbury presents The Last Viking by Don Hollway, read by Mark Meadows. ‘The Last Viking is a masterful and pulse-pounding narrative that transports the reader into the middle of the action.’ Carl Gnam, Military Heritage Harald Sigurdsson burst into history as a teenaged youth in a Viking battle from which he escaped with little more than his life and a thirst for vengeance. But from these humble origins, he became one of Norway’s most legendary kings. The Last Viking is a fast-moving narrative account of the life of King Harald Hardrada, as he journeyed across the medieval world, from the frozen wastelands of the North to the glittering towers of Byzantium and the passions of the Holy Land, until his warrior death on the battlefield in England. Combining Norse sagas, Byzantine accounts, Anglo-Saxon chronicles, and even King Harald’s own verse and prose into a single, compelling story, Don Hollway vividly depicts the violence and spectacle of the late Viking era and delves into the dramatic events that brought an end to almost three centuries of Norse conquest and expansion.

History at its finest!
Loved this book. I wanted to dive into history and learn more about vikings and their last demise. This book did not disappoint and had all the epic news of a great story while maintaining the historical facts that are so vital.

Excellent Read!!!
The Last Viking was a fast read and kept you enthralled in the adventure while pointing out facts about the time period. The author obviously put a lot of work in to the research of this book made evident by the lengthy bibliography at the end of the book. Hollway clearly states when he is speculating about something which I appreciated. Excellent read. Buy the book! You won’t regret it!

If you like the Saxon Chronicles you will love this book.
This book almost reads more like a novel then a history or biography. From the first page you are sucked into the life of Harold the last Viking he doesn’t let you go till the story is over From Norway to Russia and Byzantine empire and back again to end up in England. It’s a wonderful ride and look into the past . Well worth the money and time too read!

Not what I expected
I wanted to read a sprawling, brawling, bloody battling, novel based on historical facts and characters. This was more like reading a history textbook from high school. I just couldn’t read it through the end.

Fascinating read about a time period in history I was not familiar with
I have never had a great interest in this time period in world history, but someone recommended this book to me and I am glad they did. What amazed me the most is the distances traveled by King Harald during his life. This book read like a novel rather than a dry historical tome. I kept thinking this book would make an awesome movie.

A magnificent history of one of history's greatest warriors.
Harald Siggurdson, AKA Harald Hardrada, the Thunderbolt of the North, is the subject of this book. The life of one of the greatest warrior-kings Scandinavia ever saw is fascinating, and the author, Don Hollway, tells it in a way that keeps you engaged.

Excellent book
This is one of the books on the time of the Vikings I like the most. The story follows the adventures of the 11th century king Harald Hardrada Sigurdsson from his first to his last battle through Norway, Sweden, Russia, Ukraine, Byzanthium to Sicily and back again, followed by an almost permanent war with Denmark and his demise at Stanford Bridge against Harold Godwinson. This book also gives some idea of the contribution of the vikings to the European security and economic systems at that time.
