If you don’t put the top shelf on, the end piece will be very weak. Plus you would see all the huge screw holes. **Q: is the area just below the surface a shelf like area?** A: not exactly what you are asking, but you can have shelves above the desk, maybe at least 3 feet above desk as it is described is 28 inches from floor. I was expecting a somewhat flimsy product, and was surprised when I opened the box to find how solid the pieces felt. The desk is easy to assemble, but as according to the directions, it really is a 2-person job. The directions were simple and straightforward - actually, a bit too simple. One or two diagrams weren't entirely clear on how two pieces should be assembled, and in one instance, I had to "re-do" a step - meaning, I had to partially dismantle what I had done, re-configure the pieces, and re-assemble the pieces in order to proceed to the next step.
