This is a sturdy barrette, no cheap anything. It is about 1/2" wide and what I would describe as Tortoise Shell. Has makers insignia on one end (not huge). Clip part it's self seems strong, I have really thick hair and this holds. What really floored me is that this came in a decorative box w/velour pad inside! Yes, gift box indeed!

This barrette design was "in" when I was young. I remember them being so versatile, because you could use them for a partial ponytail (top of hair back) if you kept the inner metal part in, or remove that part and use the barrette on a full ponytail. So I was a little disappointed to see that there's no separate insert on this. The center is part of the overall design, attached, and not removable. That being said, I can put all of my hair back in it anyway, but it's a bit tight. I worry about bending that part out of being useful for a partial ponytail over time if used on all my hair. So that's why I'm giving the barrette less than four stars--I wish it were like the design I'm familiar with. But this one does have an upgrade--it has grippy, plastic stuff on the outer piece to help it stay in place. And I really like the design. I got the tangerine one. It looks very classy in the hair. Despite the name, the overall look is pretty neutral, so it goes with a lot of things.

This hair clip is super cute and good quality. The packaging made me feel I was getting a present from someone who loves me. I'd definitely buy this again

A beautiful barrette that holds fine on relatively thin hair. Seems very well made-much sturdier than any of my drugstore barrettes.
