I bought this product and it still hit the edge of my multipro tailgate by 1/2". Is there another one that has less exposure?

You put it in wrong. The ball must be tucked away for it to not hit. Try pushing it in further and use the second hole in the receiver, not the first. As for the one with "sloped receiver" that is only for 2500. The 1500 model is flat face with a cutout on the back.
