I'm not a professional, but I've read that combination ones (alarms that have photoelectric and ionization sensors) are made to be less sensitive due to false alarms, so I'd rather have dedicated photoelectric smoke alarms mixed with dedicated ionization alarms in the house. these went in our bedrooms (where we have our humidifiers) and we kept ionization alarms in there rest of the house. The install was super simple; the wiring harness is included for each so it was simply a matter of disconnecting the old ones and wiring in the new ones (don't forget to kill power to them to prevent getting zapped!) Overall I'd recommend these if you are looking for a photoelectric smoke alarm and need to purchase new or replace your old ones! These smoke detectors made my dream come true. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ GET A MIX OF TYPES *by P***C on August 19, 2018* We replaced all the smoke detectors, due to age, which was close to the 10 year recommendation. Current recommendations from the experts is to get a mix of ionization and photoelectric. The ionization models alert faster to flaming fires, while photoelectric respond much quicker to fires in the smouldering stage. These photoelectrics were installed inside the bedrooms. We also purchased 3 combination ionization and carbon monoxide detectors for the hallways outside the bedrooms and near the door out to the garage. We ended up with a total of 7 detectors, all BRK / First Alert. If your detectors are hard wired, DO NOT mix them from different manufacturers, as they usually WILL NOT work well together. Over all, we are very happy with these BRK / First Alert detectors. The only annoyance was that out of the 7 detectors, 3 had back-up batteries that were chirping due to a low charge. And another was dead. These did cost a little more than the cheapo junk on the market, BUT the lives of you and your family are worth a few more bucks.
