I was a little worried about using the kit myself because I have tried one other kit before that I ended up returning to Wal-Mart because my nails chipped the same day I painted them. I started out by unpacking everything and READING the INSTRUCTIONS. This was good because the instructions give some good tips to make the color last. The hardest part of the entire process is removing your previous gel color. You have to use cotton and soak it in acetone, place it on your nail, and wrap the tip of your nail in tin foil. I do this one hand at a time because wrapping your second hand with tin foil on your first hand is extremely difficult. You let the acetone soak your nails for 10-15min and then the previous gel color falls right off. Next you trim and buff your nails and then wipe them down with a wipe (included in the kit). It is recommended to do one hand fully and then move to the next and I recommend following that tip. The instructions tell you to keep your nails under the light for 30 seconds before the next step. I did one minute each time because I think it helps set the gels better (I could be crazy-who knows). Everything that came in the kit worked perfectly. I love the "Shall We Dance" color. After doing my nails the first time, they lasted 2 weeks and it was the same quality as going to the salon...granted I had to do the work myself, but at least it was done how I wanted it done ;) I just redid my nails with a new color purchased from Walgreens....(TIP: Do NOT purchase color from stores...it is HALF the price on desertcart) and it was easy and my nails look like I just got home from the salon. I put on the first color coat, two light cycles, then the second color coat, two light cycles, then the top coat, one light cycle. After that, I use the alcohol wipes and my nails are dry and ready to go. - The included final wipes in the kit are, as others have said, just alcohol wipes. You probably have some in your prepackaged first aid kit in your bathroom. So don't feel the need to rebuy the Sally Hansen ones when you run out. - I have had no trouble getting the polish to come off following the included directions in the kit. - As some others have said, be careful about overlapping polish onto cuticles or skin. I hate the fact it damages my nail when I remove them. It takes forever using Acetone. How is this different from Shellac?** A: All brands of gel polish are similar...the base coat forms a bond between your natural nail and the polish, and the top coat seals everything in for shine and protection. You should always use a file to break the seal of the top coat before you attempt to soak off any gel polish at home. Some brands of gel polish are tougher to remove than others. I’m a licensed nail tech and when I encounter a stubborn gel polish, I won’t try and scrape it off with an orange wood stick. Instead, after 10 minutes of soaking, I’ll use a 180 grit nail file and gently file away the softened gel polish and then wrap the nails back up for another 10 minutes and repeat the process. Then once the polish is removed, use a fine buffer block to remove any remaining base coat and smooth out rough spots. Wash your hands to remove any residue from the acetone and ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS! Apply a good, vitamin enriched cuticle oil to your nails afterward. Acetone is extremely drying to the skin and nails and that moisture needs to be replaced to keep your nail healthy. Apply every night before bed, and your nail health will improve. I hope this helps. **Q: I have thin peeling nails, will this cause more damage to them?** A: You should definitely use the remover that comes with the set to avoid damaging your nails. If you peel them off it can definitely take some of your nail enamel with it. I use a trick from the salons I used to get my nails done at and soak a cotton pad in the remover and wrap it around my nails and then wrap them each with a section of tin foil and wait until the polish comes off easily. If you do this you shouldn't have any damage. The best part about using this system is it will give a strong protection to your nails that will last a long time. **Q: after a few days, could I put another coat on the nails and use the LED lamp? Can you put other polish (like glitter) on top?** A: Yes. I "filled" my nails by slightly filing the edge. Do not peel or the whole thing can come off. Apply the desired layer to match at the nail bed and thinner twords the nail tip. Be sure to get an even coat of clear over the end. I also have added glitter on top without the clear coat to give a different look. Just use non acetone remover. You can make several different looks.
