It will depend on the actual magnet strength of that particular brand. I use a nite Ize brand, works well.

It depends on your magnetic car mount. And it is suggested to place the magnetic plate outside your phone/phone case for the best magnetism. Yes you can make it smaller they are soft material. I left mine the size they came, but you can modify that cutting to the size you need

will this stick to a TPU rubber case? Most adhesives don't stick to this commonly used case material.

It is suggested to use the clear film sticker that comes with the package. First, stick the clear film on the back of your phone case, then place the magnetic plate on the clear film. Hope it helps~! : )
