Johanna's Christmas: A Festive Coloring Book for Adults

I love this book! The pages are a heavier stock paper and the designs are actually very festive & fun to color. I use prismacolor pencils and they look great.I like this particular artists' color books, she doesn't disappoint. And she nailed it with this one!I highly recommend! The media could not be loaded. Finally and Hooray! Johanna Basford and her publisher have listened to her fans and printed this beautiful coloring book on one side of the page. Not only that, they have perforated the pages so you can take pages out if you wish to do so. The back of the pages are not neglected either as there is the lightest of gray holiday design patterns.The designs are beautiful and evocative of the holiday season. With everything from Christmas trees to polar bears, ornaments to prancing deer, the designs are instantly recognizable as Ms. Basford's charming style. There are 37 designs which celebrate the Christmas season. Christmas is my favorite holiday and having such a beautiful book of designs to color will help brighten up any dreary, cold days. Not to mention they will be a wonderful way to sit and relax when the holiday season starts becoming more and more hectic.The designs are open and easy to color. This is something that Ms. Basford began in her most recent book (“Magical Jungle”) and I'm pleased to see it once again. It makes it so much easier to use all forms of coloring medium and with the printing on one side, this time it really should be a choice of any coloring book medium.While several designs are set up too appear as two page spreads, only one design actually has elements which spread across two pages (a small garland and a baseboard.) Those elements cross the perforations and spread over the binding. Not a problem as it is so small and each of the pages can easily stand along as a single design. A suggestion for future books might be a fold-out page for the design or two of this nature. That would keep the whole design together and make it that much easier to color.The cover of the book has fold-outs front and back with coloring opportunities on it. I'll be interested to see if the UK version still retains the dust cover as it did with “Magical Jungle”. The attached cover has black line drawings as well as very pretty red, green, and gold foil accents on the front. The cover can be colored, however, it is much smoother in texture than the paper inside the coloring book. The title and presentation pages can be colored as well.I have ordered the UK version of this coloring book. Once it arrives, I will do a comparison of the US versus UK versions. I can think of several individuals I would love to give it to along with a small set of markers – which we get to use finally with this book.This is what I experienced while coloring in this book and testing the paper with my coloring medium. I will list, in the comments section below, the coloring medium I used to test this book and which I generally use for my coloring.37 – Wonderfully Festive Christmas/Winter Designs by Johanna Basford (this counts the potential two page spreads as separate designs)Printed on one side of the page (did I mention Hooray!!)Paper is heavyweight, ivory, slightly rough and perforatedGlue BindingAlcohol-based markers bleed through the pageWater-based markers and gel pens leave the slightest of shadows on the back of the page.Gel pens did not bleed through the page but did require a little more drying time.Colored pencils worked well. I tested both oil and wax-based pencils with good results. I was able to layer the same color for deeper pigment, layer multiple colors and to blend easily with a pencil style blending stick.

Another wonderful book by Johanna Basford. Paper is her new special made quality but for the first time all of the pages are single sided which I cannot love more. I wish there was pages with more full spread winter scenes but I love the book and she did a wonderful job for getting it done so quickly. Love her work!To those complaining about the lack of Santa, Elves, etc. She has stated several times she does not draw people. This is why there are no elves in The Enchanted Forest. The fact that there were mermaids in lost ocean was rare and she even remarked so. She had to create a holiday book that would work for all countries and cultures. So there is no religious themes which is obviously understandable. The lack of snowmen, Santa and elves I get too. Every country has a different vision of what Santa looks like. America and others Ajax a giant fat jolly guy, many other countries have a tall father Christmas's that will be donned in the style of the country it's in such as Russian. It would have been near impossible to do this without different places being offended. She did right by not having these. Also she has stated several times there is always similar creatures when she can (Lost Ocean couldn't have many since they aren't sea creatures) so there is always an owl, bunny, etc. Owls are her favorite so it's notnsurprising there is a Christmas Owl. Also it's a hard...not a rabbit which can be found in Christmas Lorelei and stories. People just jumping on it to complain. You won't like every single book a person writes or draws. Doesn't mean you have to be nasty about it. I personally love her book and love her work in general. She did listen to her dance which is why there are tear out, one sided pages. People on facebook have been asking for that for years. She finally did it. As for the paper, she is trying to perfect it based on fan reviews. I am active in several of her online fan pages and these are things that have been widely asked for. She listens to her fans. She is amazing. Y'all shouldn't be so harsh on her, she takes a lot of pride in her work and works really hard to give her fans what she likes and is the sweetest person ever. I will always buy her books and support her as an artist!

This is a good coloring book to have around during the holidays and winter. There’s a nice variety of different designs and some are more detailed which is nice if using pens or markers to color. I find coloring relaxing and it gives me something to do during the colder months of the year. I get myself a cup of coffee, a fluffy throw, and my dog and we cuddle up together for the evening.

I just received this today and haven't colored in it yet, but I love it. The paper is very thick, like card stock. The coloring pages are beautiful and have a lot of smaller areas to color instead of mostly large items. I feel like it's a great value compared to similar books at the major craft stores.
