is this for daytime use or just for the gym?

I used it for daytime. I found the shirts and tanks were better for me.

Does this have silicone strip on top or bottom to prevent spipping and rolling?

No silicone strip. Just very strong elastic which holds fairly well, but it can tend to roll a bit from the top. I wear it a bit lower than what the picture shows, so clothes help to prevent the rolling down.

I wear a 38-40 waist size what size should I order

Large. That's what I bought and I have a 38 inch waist

Would this help for heavy duty backpacking? Would this have any effect on chafing in a humid environment?

I use it for a lot of activities such playing tennis, running, long walks, work depending on my assignment if heavy. I went on vacation and i used it for walking up the mountains and thats when i realized more benefits of the belt and i am going to buy the second one. It works perfectly on clothing such chiffons from hidding skin snowing, 👍 yes.
