It does a great job on both. Longer hair will require you to clean it a little more often. I know it catches both our hair because I have black hair and my wife's blond, so when I clean it I see both. I doubt any hair can escape this trap. Those that do, will not pose any threat to the drain because those would be to short and go right through. I wish they had this made to fit my shower as well.
