how do you attach them to a surface? Do I glue them on?

Just place them under the glass table-top. Do not glue them. The weight of the glass holds them in place.

will these work for the glass top to go on ajack daniels barrrel?

Yes, it just puts a cushion between the glass and the hard surface.

How far apart do you space them?

Your question was how far to space them apart. However, the question should be why would you even use them. I bought them for my new kitchen table. They ruined the finish after less than three months. I spaced them about 2 feet apart. I wish I had never used them. The damaged finish is prominent.
