I recently rewired a PV array of 12 panels. Made the mistake of inverting the polarity. When I turned on the breaker, it smoked, bigtime! then all was silent. No fire, no melting of the breaker. I measured the voltage at the input and realized the polarity was reversed. My bad! I disabled the voltage at the panels, rewired correctly, and connected to a new breaker. All worked well. My biggest point with this review is, even though the breaker fried, it kept the reverse voltage of over 400 Vdc from getting to the solar inverter and causing hundreds to thousands of dollars in damage. The breaker not only will trip if the amperage is exceeded, but also protects from reversed Vdc.
