You can easily slip cords through the divide between the two back panels--no need for drilling.

Yes, the metal racks that divide records can be left out. The middle wooden support can't be left out though.

Mine didn't really have a smell besides brand new wood smell. Make sure everything is correct with it. But any smell should go away unless something is rotten. Mine is still in great condition and is beyond solid.
