Q: Could these be used to hang bowls?

Yes, but only a very shallow bowl. Otherwise the springs will be bent while they are stretched, causing them to get weak or break.

Q: What color are the hooks?

Gold; and they tarnish to a bronze after a few years.

Q: Are there two units to hold 2 plates, or is each unit two pieces that hold one plate?

Should be 2 separate units to hold 2 seperate plates

Q: Will it work for an 8 1/2 inch plate, or 6x8 inch square plates?

It works with the 8 1/2 inch plate. I haven't tried it with square plates.
