This book is a metaphorical description of a real life experience al Arabi had.  Jesus, Mohammed, Buddha, the Tao, Meister Eckhart, Lalla Swara, Joan of Arc, the disciple Thomas, Rumi, and the unknown author of Cloud of Unknowing all had this experience of the opening. It is the mystery we all seek, it is what the song "Break on Thru to the Other Side" is all about. If you want to achieve this opening, al Arabi tells how to do that, simple shut up and listen to God and God Himself will teach you.  "Take some water with you"
