Shimano CASSETTE HG400 9 speed 12-36

Inexpensive, works great, love the 12-36 range and even spacing between tooth counts of each ring.
Quite inexpensive, got mine for $23. Very light cassette, love the 12-36 range and the specific tooth counts of each ring. This replaced an 11-32 cassette on one of my recumbent bikes. I don’t miss the slightly higher highest gear at all, barely used it anyway. I love the lower lowest gear which makes climbing steep hills easier. There is no huge jump in tooth count between the largest and second-largest rings as there is on many “megarange” cassettes so shifting is smoother and moving between those two rings is less jarring to your cadence. Of course I hope this cassette is tough and durable and lasts at least as long as the new chain I installed at the same time but it’s so inexpensive that if I have to replace it a little more often I won’t mind that much.

36 tooth top gear in 9 speed price
Upgraded from an 8 speed cassette (11-28 cassette, 3X8 set up) with the following.Deore 9-Speed Mountain Bicycle Rear Derailleur - RD-M592.HG400 9 speed, 12-36 cassette.Shimano Altus 9 speed shifters.KMC 9 speed chain.Originally wanted to go up to 10 speed, 11-36 cassette, but the 9 speed offers the same top end 36 tooth ring, at a much lower cost for the whole package, a no brainer. Very satisfied.

Great cassette
Shifts great, even with my Tourney tx10 rear derailleur. I did have to adjust the screw on the back of the derailleur all the way in to get it to shift onto the 36 tooth gear. Now my heavy 29er glides up hills just like my 26". It really evens out the gear ratios perfectly, on paper and out on the trail. The only bad thing about it would be the way the gears interface with the freewheel. Each cog fits onto the freewheel separately, so you need to use a steel freewheel or it will eat into the freewheel body, when the cassette bolts eventually loosen. One other concern is the way the cassette is constructed, the bigger cogs are very long and might have a tendency to flex, but the new spacers help because they are wider than traditional ones and should strengthen it almost as well as a spider type cluster. So if you're on a tight budget, and need real mountain gear ratios for your 9 speed 29er, this is the one you need.

Bargain
I wanted to ease climbing the local hills on my road bike. Discovered that 9 speed Shimano are all interchangeable, road and mountain, so I installed this with a microShift mountain bike derailleur and a new chain. For just over $60 total I have a 12-36T instead of a 11-25T cassette, much easier on my back on a 12% grade.

Great Deal
This is an authentic Shimano cassette. I bought the 12-36 cassette to replace my 11-32 cassette on my Scott Aspect hardtail. I did have to adjust the rear derailleur using the B screw as the lowest gear is larger in diameter than my original. I did some other adjustments on the derailleur to make sure the shifting was good, and it is working great. I will be climbing some hills in my neighborhood soon.

and with the 36t granny I was hauling my ass up hills like I was 10 years younger
Replaced a Shimano 11-34t with this cassette, I was killing myself going up hill on the that 34t. I slapped on this new cassette, and with the 36t granny I was hauling my ass up hills like I was 10 years younger. 29 bucks well spent.

great upgrade -12-36t
just upgraded my bike from a 3x8 to a 1x9 using this cassette , a alivieo 9sp shifter and derailleurused a crank set that has a single 36 t chain-ring in the front and this setup handles the hills very wellif Your upgrading to a 1x9 then this will fill the bill !

Great!
Excellent replacement for a 11-30T on a triple chainring 22/32/44T. I put a 12-36T cassette on in 3 minutes because I wanted lower gears and a wider spread for our local mountain bike trails. This will allow me to keep the chainring on the 32T ring, essentially making it a 1x9, I was getting a lot of dropped chains moving to the 22T and this was the cheapest solution.

Great value, durable and precisely made
You might save a few grams with the higher specced cassette but you will also lose some durability. These components are nicely made, long-lasting and really easy to source when they do need to be replaced.

Good quality, fast delivery 👌
Cassette was as expected, fitted within a few minutes. The quality appears to be good as expected from shimano will update this review after a few rides should the components fail.

Shimano quality at a very good price
I've been using these cassettes for the last 15 months of cycle couriering in London. These are robust, cheap and have bery smooth shifting. Gear range is excellent when combined with my 44/32/22 triple

Gear to suit the individual
I replaced the standard 11 to 28 cassette on my road bike with this as well as changing the 50 tooth ring on the front with a 46 tooth ring this to me gives a far more realistic gear range for the average leisure cyclist
