They are plastic but seem sturdy enough for the application and have a weighted base for stability. Positioning is very flexible and the lower phone supports are spring loaded so they won't scratch the phone if hit while placing the phone.The stand folds flat for easy storage (one of them is in my van), with the joints being held in place by friction only (no way to tighten).
