Eventually I had to use the stool for my mom and now keep it in her room. At first the room had the smell but over time it lessened. After about 6 or 7 months the smell was not noticeable. Also, you need to make sure that you have your foot on the step before leaning on the handle otherwise the handle has no counterweight and it will tilt downwards with the step tilting upwards. You may lose your balance. **Q: Everyone talks about the non skid platform, how about the legs. It will be used on tile floor. Will it slide?** A: The legs have rubber tips that seem to have very good gripping properties.
