How thick is the bottom piece of wood?

It's hard to tell because the sides are glued against the bottom (think "L" shape) so the bottom piece is not exposed. The rest of the file folder is approx 1/4" thick and I'm guessing the bottom is the same. Here's a caveat - if you are using it for 3rd cut file folders, note that they go in sideways. The result is that your files spill out of the open side. It's a great folder for magazines, though.

Can these be stained to make them darker?

You might need to sand. It's very smooth and hard on the outside which makes me think there's a very thin, almost undetectable, urethane coating. It's defintely not obviously porous. Good luck!

Can this fit 10” x 13” envelopes?

The file folder is 10" deep as measured on the outside. When you allow for the wood (1/4" each side) it is about 1/2" too short
