Quality, reliable, long-lasting pencil topper
As a former engineering student, I recognized the Staedtler name as a German company that provides high-quality products for engineers and architects. I am so fed-up with those dinky, Made-in-China, plastic pencil parers/toppers that are unable to do the job, and that snap the lead, bite the wood, and jam all the time. The plastic housing in those cheaper brands inevitably shatters within weeks of use. But not this Staedtler brand! This Staedtler pencil topper is a dream to use. It works smoothly without jamming or biting the pencil. The metal blade is strong and sharp enough to do the job it was designed for. It pares the pencils down to a very fine, clean point. The housing is tough and durable and a comfortable size to hold in the hand. It catches the pencil parings in an enclosed cup that has a lid that is secure; i.e., the lid doesn't keep popping off, like so many other toppers. And the cup is easy to empty. The topper has two holes for different-sized pencils, and the wider hole is perfect for crayons. Another feature I really like is the pop-up flap that covers the holes. This prevents particles from falling out if the topper falls over. However, the topper has a wide enough base so that it never topples over. I bought two of these toppers -- one for me and one for my daughter for her schoolwork. The only drawback to this topper is that the extra pop-up flap broke off after a few days of my daughter using it. She was able to reattach it without any problem, as the hinge part did not break. I put this down to her being rough on it, as the topper I use never broke. Moving parts are always the weakest part of anything, so damage is to be expected when children are involved. Anyway, the extra flap is not necessary to the function of the topper. If you want a pencil topper that eliminates frustration and performs perfectly for just a few dollars more, this is the topper for you. I give this product two thumbs up and endorse it with supreme confidence.

Great quality and convenient sharpener!
Works excellent! Convenient size, very sharp. Precision sharpening, no breaks. It sharpened my pencil quickly and accurately. Didn't jam and created a perfect point.

Really Solid Manual Sharpener (will buy again when i inevitably lose this one)
While the Kum Longpoint is still my all time favorite, this Staedtler is very very good. I'd rank it above the Kum Magnesium, Prismacolor, and Pacific Arc manual sharpeners. It produces a moderate to long point, and so far, the blades have stayed sharp. They are replaceable, held in place with small screws. The shaving container is big enough. Smaller than Prismacolor, but larger than the Kum Long Point. I have tried several different hardnesses of lead, all with good results. The lid features my favorite design of the leading players; it's properly hinged and folds into a small recess when the sharpener is in use. The Kum and Prismacolor both have "flap" style hinges that break over time. All in all a very good choice.

It does the job and it's easy to use
No much to add to this kind of product: it does what it's supposed to do, it works well, it's easy to hold and use, and what I valued when purchasing it, it's the compartment to collect the shavings so that you don't need a trashcan all the time. I don't give the fifth star because the lid is not there anymore since the connecting piece broke so easily in the beginning. Luckily is not something needed to make the product work so it's fine.

Smaller but mightier
Do yourself a favor and spend the extra few bucks on the Staedtler sharpener and skip the prismacolor. I have been on a huge coloring kick lately, so I purchased the prismacolor believing the quality would match the quality of their pencils. However, this proved to be untrue as it broke within a couple of weeks. Thinking it was due to my struggling to get the top off to empty the shavings (despite watching a demonstration on YouTube,) I ordered a second one and treated it with much more care, but it also broke within a week. I used a rubber band to keep the top from falling off and continued using it, but it began to chew my pencils up something awful! They were a new set so I thought maybe it was just the pencils. I finally broke down and ordered the Staedtler and it’s a HUGE improvement. Though it’s smaller, it sharpens the pencils incredibly well with only a couple quick turns. I have yet to experience the chewing up as I did with the prismacolor sharpener, but will definitely update if the sharpener goes downhill. Emptying the shavings is also significantly easier and it’s just a sturdier feel. This is a much better design in general and a much better value! So glad to have finally found a decent sharpener!

Parents and Students: This is for You!
This is a truly useful supply for school and office. For one, the color variety is truly magnificent. I got the blue one, and wow, it is very nice. It is a manual sharpener, meaning that you yourself have to sharpen with your hands. However, the stress is very minimal. It only takes a few seconds to get a sharpened pencil, so good speed! Its power is very good! Only two to three spins, and you've got yourself a good pencil!. A really good thing is that it is not only for graphite: It also works for colored pencils! This is very useful for school, and my son uses this a lot! Overall this Pencil Sharpener is something that I truly think all parents should get for their kids, or for their own usage!

Labels peel off, allowing viewing of function. Replacement blades not available.
I hesitated over buying this, since obviously there was no view of the actual operation of the device. But I have one of the metal sharpeners that is at the heart of this, and while it is clearly only a mid-range sharpener, that is usually good enough. The tub on this one is capacious enough to handle more than one sharpening (the lid on my KUM automatic pops from built up shavings if I don't empty it frequently). Plus at the $4 I paid, this is actually cheaper than buying the metal sharpener inside all by itself. If I didn't like the container, I could dismantle it and have a useful sharpener at lower cost (not counting time and effort) than buying it alone. Since replacement blades aren't available (Boooo!), that also makes this the cheapest way I know of to get replacement blades - with an environmental penalty for those of us that believe in reuse, don't replace. I was absolutely delighted to discover that the labels peel off with only a little effort, giving one a much more functional sharpener that is significantly more attractive to boot! I've been using Staedtler products for decades (I still have and use 2mm lead holders from way back when), but it gives me to joy to see their billboard-type advertising on a product, especially when it is reducing the utility of that product. It still says "Staedtler" on the bottom, in case I should ever forget. In use, it is a satisfactory sharpener. The first pencil I tried to sharpen had the lead break off, creating a difficult to clear jam, but the next three sharpened just fine, with only a little chipping around the tip of the wood. After a while, the shavings tend to obscure the view of the blade at work, but a temporary reprieve can be gained by removing the top of the sharpener and using its inner works to tamp the built up shavings down a bit. At least you won't need to immediately find a place to empty it. Fans of David Rees' "How to Sharpen Pencils: A Practical & Theoretical Treatise on the Artisanal Craft of Pencil Sharpening" may despair at the damaged done to the shavings thereby, but I doubt they will be using this sharpener for esthetic shaving generation anyway. So, good value for the money, but a nuisance peeling the labels off and replacement blades not available. I'm going to say 4 stars without the labels, three with.
