How many cameras does it record? if i get this usb i do not need plan subscription? usb is same as plan?

Right now we have five camera's sync to it. I don't have a subscription plan, works great. I'm not sure what all a "plan" covers, but we are very happy with our system.

Compatible with ipads and tablets?

I dont think so COM iPad And tablets dont have USB ports

Will an external hard drive work for this module?

It may work as long as it is attached by a USB plug into the module.

do we need more than one flash drive fore six cameras

I have 5 cameras and the 256 GB of memory is more than adequate, especially since I delete almost all of my video clips on a daily or regular basis. Even if you saved all your clips for some unknown reason, I assume it would take a long time to max out your memory unless all 6 cameras are recording constantly.

Works, Plug N Play, good value

Works great, now I can see all my motion clips from my doorbell after the fact. And the stray cats that keep setting it off at 2am lol. Holder worked great, please note you need to use your own block just like the one in the photo. Plug and play, no programming/configuring needed, just change storage from "cloud" to "local."
