I have a powermax 5500 opener so will this genie gbwc2-bx series ii wall unit work?

Well, yes works, but, only 6 months, I feel these controllers are defective because mine don't work anymore like the original. Only 6 months, need a new one again.

Will this turn on the lights only for my Genie 650?

To the best of my knowledge the remote only works with the Genie. You program it to communicate with the Genie, not any external light fixtures. Don't see how it could be done, but who knows, someone out there might be able to rig it to work.
