A magnificent pictorial document of the flowers grown in the greatest German garden of its time , the Hortus Eystettensis is in a class of its own when it comes to the range of flowers engraved . First published in 1613, the 367 copperplate engravings by Basilius Besler (1561–1629) capture the spectacular diversity of the palatial gardens of Prince-Bishop Johann Konrad von Gemmingen (1593/95–1612) in Eichstätt, Bavaria, Germany. The meticulous illustrations are organized according to the four seasons, and, following the classification system used today, show plants belonging to a total of 90 families and covering 340 genera . The whole collection is regarded as one of the finest treasures of botanical literature; it was described by Carl Linnaeus, the legendary 18th-century botanist and zoologist, as an “incomparable work.” Besler’s pictorial catalog long outlived the gardens, which were destroyed in 1634 by invading Swedish troops. In auction, the asking price for a first-edition copy of Hortus Eystettensis is now more than half a million dollars . With this edition, TASCHEN opens up the garden to a much wider audience: a rich and beautiful record, destined to keep the garden’s beauty in bloom.

Beautiful botanic graphics
What a charming book. I love the format. It fits easily next to me as I paint floral creations. Such a great reference book for all shapes and colors of various floral plants. I’m so glad I got this book.

Beautiful Book for value
Most of these books are fairly expensive, but I found this for less than $18. What I didn't expect is how small it is. It is something like 6x7 inches. I now see why it is so cost effective. Still makes a great coffee table reader. I gave 4/5 just because it wasnt very plain how small it is. However it does give the dimensions in the finer details.

Lots of pics/info in a small book
I have ordered other Taschen books (Monet) and I like how compact they are and loaded with info and lots of pictures! I thought this particular book was a general informational guide on flora, but its specifically related to the flora that was brought in and grown at the garden's castle in Germany. Regardless, the hand drawn pictures and story is interesting. Recommend!

Gorgeous, but undersized, book.
Full color under-sized book is beautiful! This book has MANY full-page portraits of flowers followed by full descriptions of the color plates. The pages are semi-glossy and gorgeous. The book is heavy, and almost 2 inches thick. Anyone that stops over likes to look at these beautiful pictures, although the pages feel too small. I use this book as a reference for using flowers in my art work. I have included a picture of an 8.5" X 11" sheet of paper behind the book to show how large the pages are. 集合体恐怖症の人には無理なページが有る！
とにかく沢山の植物の水彩画が載ってる。個性的なタッチで好みは分かれると思う。サイズは小さめだけど、かなり分厚いので持ち運びには向いてない。紙素材のハードカバーですが、しっかりした作りです。タイトルの通り細かい描写が集合体恐怖症の人には辛いかも…私も無理でダメなページには付箋を貼って開かないようにしてます…笑
